Remove old snapshots with vRealize Orchestrator

$

Hi All,

I used to have Powercli script in one of our windows server that ran every night at 1AM trough scheduled tasks and remove all snapshot with the age of 3 days automatically, for audit reason, I can't use that anymore.

The next option that I have is vRealize Orchestrator and I am struggling with it to get it work.

This is a first time that I am using Orchestrator so don't have a lot of knowledge about it.

I've added our vCenter to it, then I cloned Remove old snapshots, on the cloned workflow, I clicked on the scheduled workflow, recurrence everyday at 1AM, age in days set to 3 and no notification email, then I hit the submit, it created a task.

On the workflow Runs tab in the task menu, I have two logs from last two night and their status is waiting.

also, my snapshot age is 5 days, so it should work.

Thanks in advance

Win10 1607, Workstation Pro 14, new installation, neither NAT nor automatic bridged networking working

Hardware: Lenovo T460P, with Intel Dual Band-AC 8260 and Intel I219-LM NICs

I've both wired and wireless networks with the VMware Bridged Protocol both selected and not selected, can't seem to get a network connection of any kind for the Win10 1709 VM I've spun up.

I see VMware Network Adapters VMnet1 and VMnet8, and when I look at the network configuration in VMware I also see VMnet0.

As part of my troubleshooting, I'd removed VMnet1 and VMnet8, then I closed down the VM and Workstation itself, then launched vmnetcfg.exe as administrator to reset to default, with no luck.

Been looking over various VMware documents for a few hours now, and don't see what I might be doing wrong, and nor can I figure out how to get to the VMware web site to file a support request under the complimentary 30-day installation support. (My copy was ordered by our purchasing department with a credit card, and not under the account listed in our support contracts.)

Can someone here provide a clue or three?

Thanks,

Kurt

Check MPIO multiple path using script

$

Hi gurus,

I have a bunch of VMs that have different storage configuration, some has RAW mapping LUN disk with multiple paths. I'd like to scan the VM list and generate a report indicates the MPIO status including the number of active paths to SAN per VM, not per host. I have VBS and PowerShell script running on VM. It's based on WMI function but restricted by credential or something else, in many cases there's RPC server unavailable error. So running WMI script on VM is not ideal. I wonder if someone could help developing a PowerCli script and scan VMs at host level but generate the report per VM. This is to replace the manual check operation on vCenter, go to each VM, check how many RAW mapped disks and how many paths for each disk.

Thank you,

Daniel

Local RDM Device support "adjacent to" Virtual SAN devices

$

Referencing the Per Limitations of Virtual SAN section of VMware Docs: "Virtual SAN does not support RDM, VMFS, diagnostic partition, and other device access features."

I'm interpreting this limitation to mean vSAN does not support provisioning an RDM to an individual disk that is already participating in a vSAN cluster; this makes sense.   That being considered, I have a VM that requires access to Local Storage adjacent to the devices that comprise the vSAN, "outside of" the Virtual SAN.  These adjacent devices will be SAS-attached SSDs on the same modern LSI SAS HBA (Non-RAID, JBOD) that supports up to 24 drives;  the proposed RDM devices will be the same or similar to the drives currently participating in the vSAN.   Additionally, I've confirmed that the LSI controller can support this per VMware KB document warning that the SAS controller supports "...SCSI Inquiry Vital Data Product (VPD) page code 0x83, which is used to directly address and communicate with RDM devices."

The goal is to create RDMs to some new local SSDs and attach them to 1:1 to VMs (VMDKs running on the vSAN).  The VMs would be pinned to the host and therefore the RDM.  These will be "app protected" VMs replicating to a failover VM on another host in the cluster.

I cannot think of any reason why this would not be supported for this use case/scenario but wanted to gather input & opinions.

Many thanks in advance.

DS3DB0 creation taking too long

Hello. I re-provisioned Tile 0 yesterday and noticed the complete creation of DS3DB0 has not finished. It has been almost 24 hours since the provisioning process began. Is it normal for this to take almost 24 hours to complete? Keep in mind that I was able to successfully create DS3DB0 previously, with no changes to the environment.

Here is the output from the installoutput.txt file:

[root@DS3DB0 ~]# tail -f /ds3/VMmark3-DS3installoutput.txt

Unknown: Out of Memory [5880] in syslog

Hello all.  First post.  Been playing with ESXi for a few months and I'm having an unusual issue.  Here's my hardware and VM setup:

Hardware:  Supermicro x9scm-f-o with 32GB of ECC RAM and E3-1230v2 CPU

Also included is a M1015 reflashed to IT mode and used as passthrough with VT-d to the FreeNAS VM.

VMs:

FreeNAS 8.3.1 64-bit with 20GB of RAM assigned (3vCPU)

Linux Mint 13 LTS 4GB RAM (3vCPU)

Cyberpower UPS Appliance VM 2GB RAM (1vCPU)

After building the machine a week or two went by, then I lost network connectivity to the entire box(this was when I first realized something might be wrong).  I couldn't use the vSphere client or access the guest machines.  I attempted to "Restart Management Network" locally but that didn't solve anything.  Still no connectivity.  I then attempted to shutdown the box but it wouldn't shutdown.  Ultimately I power cycled it.

So over the last 2 months at random times I've lost network connectivity.  Thanks to reading various sources I've found an error in my syslog that ends up being logged 5-20+ times in a row, and happens randomly at intervals of 2-10 minutes.  I get an error that says:

Unknown: out of memory [5880]

I thought it was due to my VMs using a lot of network connections, but never really could find someone else with the error.  It's very non-specific and I'm running out of leads to check out the issue, hence I've turned to the community.

Well, today I have decided I want to figure this puzzle out, so I shutdown all of the VMs and that error still continues to show up in the syslog.  So clearly I have a configuration problem somewhere.  This is odd to me because I've tried to avoid changing settings that I wasn't 100% sure was appropriate for me because Im a newbie to ESXi and I'd rather not break my own installation.  The only thing I've done that might be construed as an 'advanced' feature modification is I enabled the RDM function for the Linux Mint installation.  It was already on a hard drive and I thought I'd just do RDM passthrough and use it that way if it worked.  Well, it has so I left it like that.

I can't find much info on what 5880 might represent, so I assumed its a PID or something.  It has changed from one bootup to the next.  So here's the output from the CLI:

~ # ps -P | grep 5880

5880 5880 sfcb-vmware_raw      5606 /sbin/sfcbd

5881 5880 sfcb-vmware_raw      5606 /sbin/sfcbd

5882 5880 sfcb-vmware_raw      5606 /sbin/sfcbd

5883 5880 sfcb-vmware_raw      5606 /sbin/sfcbd

5884 5880 sfcb-vmware_raw      5606 /sbin/sfcbd

5885 5880 sfcb-vmware_raw      5606 /sbin/sfcbd

5887 5880 sfcb-vmware_raw      5606 /sbin/sfcbd

5888 5880 sfcb-vmware_raw      5606 /sbin/sfcbd

~ #

Again, I tried searching for sfcbd and it really doesn't give me any clues.

I actually built 2 identical systems.  One for me and one for a friend.  He uses more RAM for his VMs(and different VMs) but he doesn't have this issue.  I'm figuring I've done something to my installation to deserve this since his is flawless, but I am out of leads.

tl;dr:  I get the "Unknown: out of memory" error along with a loss of all network connectivity randomly after 1 day to 2 weeks.  Sometimes when the server would be idle(such as at night).  I don't know if they are related, but I assume they are.

Anyone have ideas to try?  This is baffling me and I'm really at a loss to explain the problem let alone how to fix it.

Thanks!

USB devices not being seen by Workstation if plugged-in on Thunderbolt Dock

Using Workstation 12.5.7.

I have a Dell Precision 5520 laptop connected to a docking hub via Thunderbolt.  I have a 4-port unpowered USB hub plugged-in on the docking hub.

For some reason, VMware Workstation cannot see any USB devices in the Removable Devices list when the hub is plugged into the dock.  If I connect the hub directly into a USB port on the laptop, then VMware Workstation can see the USB devices on the hub.  If I plug the USB devices directly into the dock, then VMWare can also see them.  How do I get VMware to see these devices on my hub when it is plugged-in to the dock?

For upgrading a windows server from 5.5 to 6.5 I know you have to run the migration assistant on the vCenter server you are going to migrate. Concerning the appliance installer can that be on any Windows box, does it have to be a server, in the same subnet etc? Do you have to download everything to the box you are running the installer on?

Good afternoon.

I have an ESX 6.0 UP2 environment set up. Operating normally.

But days ago a fiber stopped working. Since redundancy is working, we have not seen it.

We only discovered it due to the storage team alert that informed us.

Doubt:

- Where or how do i set the ESX so the same report that a fiber has stopped working?

VMRC Linux Packaging

$

I'm not sure where else to send this request, but I think for anyone trying to use VMRC on a less than mainstream Linux distribution (like Arch), it would make their life easier if VMRC was packaged as an AppImage, Snap, or Flatpak. That way, anyone could use the one install no matter which distribution they were on, and we should never have to worry about dependency conflicts.

Thanks,

Jameson

This is killing me. All I want to do is add an additional NIC to two VMs. I can't. This is a new installation. I have 5 running production VMs plus the vcenter appliance. Things WERE working fine and just quit working out of the blue.

I can't even "connect" an ISO image to a CDROM.

I tried powering down the VM with no change. (Actually the VM never would even show is was powered off in the client, but since the only power option was "power on" at this point, I assumed it was off.)

I can't modify ANY VMs at all. I have restarted the vCenter Appliance with no change in behavior. Why are we forced to use this horrible Web Client??????

Running 5.5 build 1750787 - Have been pushing to sell hyper-v since the support options for vmware are cost prohibitive for SMB, but vendor for this customer requested vmware.

Hi,

I have a problem. I just converted my physical machine (lenovo Laptop, windows 8.1), with the vmware vcenter converter standalone. Everything worked fine, no problems, no errors.

But when I want to open the file in vmware on my Ubtunu machine (a.t.m. dual-boot with win8 on the same laptop), after a while it returns the error:

Failed to lock the file

Cannot open the disk '/media/remy/WD My Book/Laptop-Remy/Laptop-Remy.vmdk' or one of the snapshot disks it depends on.

Module DiskEarly power on failed.

Failed to start the virtual machine.

I don't know if has to do with Ubutntu (version 13.04), or with vmware workstation (10.0)

I hope some can help.

OneDrive - Windows 10 1709 Files On-Demand abilities of the new OneDrive sync client.

$

OK.  So I'm trying to get the new "On-Demand"  OneDrive client working with UEM...and was hoping someone has already figured it out.

I did not see a new OneDrive application config posted yet.

OneDrive Files-On-Demand works very well in my non-persistent pool, but you have to run setup everytime you want to use it.

This is where UEM comes in!  Let's see if we can figure this out together.

Once you set the FilesOnDemandEnabled=1 registry value, the client on displays your files, and no sync is performed.  You only download the files you need when accessed.

You can add the SilentAccountConfig=1 dword policy as well...so the users do not need to setup anything.

Now I just need to determine what registry values & %appdata%\local files need to be retained via UEM.  This is the difficult part.
