VCSA 6.5 - cannot migrate to another host

Hi all - I am running a lab with VCSA 6.5 (latest build) and ESXi 6.5 (latest build).

I can migrate any of approximately 40 VMs, but I cannot migrate the VCSA VM.  I have tried removing from inventory, adding back in, etc.  I can even remove from inventory and register it on another host, but then I cannot migrate it still.

I have no snapshots running, no ISOs attached, no hardware passed through.  This is a vanilla VCSA that was able to migrate a few weeks ago.  As said, DRS works fine and vMotion otherwise works fine but as soon as I right-click the VCSA VM "Migrate" greys out.

Any thoughts?  I'd like to move this VM to different storage but that's becoming quite an issue!

Thanks!

Vcloud Director 5.5.6 version - RHEL 7- RHEL 7 network issue using Vapp network

Hi All,

Problem description:

>>RHEL 7 - RHEL 7 pings drops using vapp network(isolated) in vcloud director.

>>If we initiate ping from source machine(rhel7) to destination machine(rhel7) we do see initial ping drops up to 9 packets and then afterwards works fine and there are no further ping drops. Then if we try to initiate pings after a day or so then we encounter the issue again. It’s like RHEL7 has issues “awakening” its NICs or the portgroup after some standby time.

>>We are not experiencing such issue with any other OS(linux 6,windows) machines.

>>The issue is happening only with isolated network and not with organization network.

Please let me know if anybody else has face the same issue or the possible solutions for this?

Vulnerability Scans Will Crash VCSA 6.5.0.5200

Recently we have discovered an issue where a simple vulnerability scan (we are using latest OpenVAS + Full and fast ultimate scan all TCP ports) will crash the VCSA. It is killing this new service called: vmdnsd (VMware Domain Name Service)

Our setup is fairly small, 3 hosts and about 40 guests, highly under utilized, with plenty of free memory and CPU. Each night the scans kick off, we noticed the following start scrolling by in the log files:

vmdnsd t@139675744290560: dirsync failed with 9127.

vmdnsd t@139675744290560: dirsync failed with 9127.

vmdnsd t@139675744290560: dirsync failed with 9127.

vmdnsd t@139675744290560: dirsync failed with 9127.

This happens over and over continuously until the service is restarted. If we try to login to the Web client, we are presented with a web SSO error, and are unable to login. The only solution we've found to this, is SSH into the VCSA and run the following:

service-control --stop vmdnsd

service-control --start vmdnsd

This will quickly stop the "dirsync failed with 9127." from scrolling, and allow logins again. We have opened a ticket with VMware on this issue, but so far they have been unable to help with this, and basically have told us "just stop scanning the appliance". Not really a good fix, as we have basically identified a DOS on the VCSA, and they are unable to fix it.

Just wanted to give everybody else a heads up, in case your security team (like ours) performs regular scans on the network (OpenVAS, Nessus, etc.) For now, just put the VCSA into the exception list

Error: nfs41client failed to load

Hi,

I'm trying to install vmware 6.0U2 on HP blade BL460cG9 (with HPE FlexFabric 10Gb 2-port Adapter 536FLB).
During the installation phase is notified an error "nfs41client failed to load" and subsequently being shown the attached error.

It could be a compatibility problem?
the drivers are not present in the installation ISO?
any other cause?

I tried to insert the driver (with ESXi-Customizer) in ISO, but the error does not change.
Thanks

VMware ESXi5.5.0 Update 1.

Compliance status shows incompatible:

VMkernel and Service Console network interfaces are sharing the same subnet 10.x.xx.x. This configuration is not supported after upgrade. Only one interface should connect to subnet 10.x.xx.x

Not sure how to resolve.

Upgrade to 6.5 broke ESXi server (503 error - hostd / Connection failure)

Hello, I just upgraded to ESXi 6.5 and now the server no longer works;

Trying to remotely connect to the server (eg. through fusion or the embedded web host vib) results in a 503 error.

Any use of esxcli commands results in "Connect to localhost failed: Connection failure." errors

I'm just using a free license and it looks like I cannot create a support request.

Any idea of what could be happening?

Thanks for any help, logs follow

connecting through the shell - which was enabled since before - i can see the following in the vmkernel.log

Hi Everybody,

I installed an ESXi 6.5 there is 1 month ago and i tried to change the default language of the console into french. But it's impossible.

In fact i installed a VM of existing windows 2003 server. Trust me when i say it's too hard to work with.

I can have it in Italian or other languages but no french.
I already tried to append " /?locale=fr_FR " at the end of the URL.
I also tried to locate the the file to change via ssh. Again without succeed.

So please could someone help me ?

Is there a file to change via ssh ? If yes which one ?

Thank you for reading me !

Hope i was clear enough.

LDAP user not assigned Administrator Role

vCenter Server Appliance 5.5

I'm having an issue when trying to authenticate to the vCenter MOB with my LDAP account.  I'm added to the administrator group on my LDAP Server, I can log into the web client with my account, but I don't see my account listed under the "Administrator" Role.  I've added my user account to the Administrator Group. Are there any other requirements on the VC or LDAP Server side to get my account added to the Admin Role?

I also can't login to the System page using LDAP even though I successfully enabled LDAP.

Any suggestions would be appreciated, thanks!

Entitle Users to Desktops or Applicaitons with PowerCli 6.5

I'm trying to figure out how to entile user to a desktop pool user powercli to get around a bug I'm experiancing. I've got this far

Get-Module -ListAvailable *Vmware* | Import-Module

$hvserver=Connect-HVServer -Server euc-conn-wd01.ur.rochester.edu -User 'euc_automation_svc' -Password 'Password123!' -Domain 'UR'

$viewAPI=$hvserver.ExtensionData

$desktop_service_helper = New-Object VMware.Hv.DesktopService

$userEntitlementService = New-Object VMware.Hv.UserEntitlementService

$userEntitlementService.UserEntitlement_Create

I am just not grasping the api enough to proceed any farther. The api reference says

NAMETYPEDESCRIPTION
_thisManagedObjectReferenceA reference to the UserEntitlement used to make the method call.
baseUserEntitlementBase

attributes needed to add a user entitlement

View API - VMware API Explorer - VMware {code}

I'm trying to figure out how to add user@domain to desktop_pool_a. I'm pretty sure I need to look up the id for the desktop pool id.

ESXi 6.5 connectivity issue on PowerEdge R430

Dear,

We encountering connectivity issue on newly install esxi 6.5 on PE R430

Whenever we preform file copy (30-40GB files size) from one of the VM Guest to another machine thought network (100MB),  it end up with connectivity issue.

Both VM guest and host became inaccessible thought network.

ESX console can still be access, try with "restart management network" and use "testing management network" with result OK on default gateway or other machine.

But unable to access both guest and host thought network.

Connection become normal after shutdown / restart the esx host.

Check with VM guest OS event log, indicated that it should still be running during issue and following the auto shutdown/startup setting of esx host.

Look into log and found the following warning keep prompt during copy task perform.

cpu## :67701)WARNING: ntg3-throttled: Ntg3XmitPktList:372: vmnic0:TX ring full (0)

I wonder if anyone with suggestion on this issue? thx

Network Core Dump to Windows Server UNC?

$

Hey gang.  I'm trying something quite 'off the reservation' as we PowerCLI users like to do from time to time.  Recently, we encountered the Purple Screen of Death on one of our hosts.  After 2 days of coordination and getting a Cisco tech on-site, we were able to have the host back up in no time.  The lesson learned from this is to set the hosts so that in case of PSOD, the host will automatically reboot in 120 seconds - which is normal.  However, we also wish to have the core dump automatically be captured and stored on our network.

I've looked at the 'netdumper' file on the OS of the vCSA.  It has a parameter known as:

# The directory to store core files.

NETDUMPER_DIR="/var/core/netdumps"

What I'm trying to do is to keep the core dump from trying to place itself on a host's local storage.  Some of our newer hosts are stateless/diskless, so to have it write internally on some partition is going to get it.  But what could work (in theory) is to have it written to someplace on the shared network.  I'd like to configure this thing so that the "NETDUMPER_DIR" would be something like

\\dircifs08\shared\vmware\coredumps\<selected folder for a server's coredumps>

I'm trying to learn if it's actually possible to do it that way.  Looking at the code in the config file has me worried that it has to be some Linux partition instead of a Windows directory.

Can anyone help me with this?  I have no more hair (it's all pulled out).  Between this and yesterday's full day of server (VM) builds, my brain fried.

Thank you in advance for whatever assistance you can provide.

Take care all,

Miguel

Horizon View Connection through PowerCli issue

hi,

I am working on automating horizon View connection server installation and configuration.

I am using horizon view Connection server 7.0.2 and PowerCli 6.5 (with VMware.VimAutomation.HorizonView module).

When I first time try to connect using Connect-HVServer cmdlet, it throws below error:

Connect-HVServer : ExceptionType : VMware.Hv.EntityNotFound

ErrorMessage : Could not find user or group in AD

Id : VMware.Hv.UserOrGroupId

There is a manual workaround for this on VMware knowledge base:  https://kb.vmware.com/selfservice/microsites/search.do?language=en_US&cmd=displayKC&externalId=2148374

When I manually add the user to Horizon View Administrators and restart the server, the same cmdlet works fine.

We dont want to do this manually.  Wanted to see if anybody has come across this problem and automated this step or if anybody knows if this issue is fixed in later versions - 7.0.3 or 7.1.0??

Ajay

Is there a cmdlet to capture the ip address ? ?

Protection Groups and Storage vMotion

I'm using array based replication and need to balance some datastores.   As I move virtual machines to different datastores, how do I minimize the work to keep the VMs in their current protection groups?  Do I need to create one protection group for every group of datastores that a VM might ever live on, so that storage vmotion operations do not move a Vm out of its protection group?

Black Backgrounds in Microsoft Outlook and Skype for Business

I recently upgraded both my Mac OS to 10.12.4 and Vmware Fusion to 8.5.6.  Since those upgrades I am now seeing strange background issues in Microsoft Outlook and Skype for Business (see the attached screenshot).  The background of the application will at times turn black.  I'm running windows 7 professional as my VM.  Anyone else had an issue like this and know how to resolve them?

Zero clients not installing usb device driver

I am trying to plug a usb speaker into our Viewsonic zero client, with Win7 installed.  It gets power, but it does not do the 'installing device driver' thing at the bottom right.  The vm is part of a linked clone pool with View 6.2.1.  What permissions am I missing?  It is the same whether it's a user or admin who logs in.

I have global view policy of USB access Allow in View Manager

Is this a Windows permission?  Or a view client permission? Any help would be appreciated.  It is not just for the speakers, it will not see any USB sticks as well.

thanks.
