Just registered to ask a simple question

I have some old code laying around which extracts some vm-information using vb.net (vimclient) and puts this data to another database. Works fine for years.

Now my boss asks me to get an info about the used operating system on the guest machines. No problem, got that already (sorry, old vb-code):

This works fine til 'Windows Server 2008' or 'Windows 10'. These Operating Systems are reported, but it's 'Edition', e.g. Professional or Enterprise is missing.

So, this is the output of my VM: 'Microsoft Windows 10 (64-Bit)' But it is Windows 10 Enterprise. Same with Windows Server 2008 or 2012.

Question is how to get that edition from vmware? Im using vimclient v5.5. Maybe I should use v6.x? but don't think it will help?!

Есть 3 сервера, купленные в разное время и несколько (достаточно) разные по конфигурации. Всё самосборное самоварное. Покупалось частями: по одному процу, тройке линеек памяти, паре дисков, потом докупалось потихоньку. Все чётные железки, тем не менее, одних моделей.

Набиты разным количеством дисков: 1 сервер имеет 2+6 SAS дисков (по 450 и 600 Гб); 2 сервер имеет 16 корзин, но установлено только 9 SAS дисков (по 600 Гб); 3 сервер имеет 8 SATA дисков (по 2 Тб). Используются аппаратные RAID'ы уровней 1 и 10.

Сейчас на каждом из них стоит Server 2008 R2 с VMware Workstation, на которой работают разные виртуальные сервера: Active Directory (DC1 и DC2), DNS, DHCP, WDS, KMS, WSUS, File Server, Intranet IIS, Dr. Web ES, Garant, Consultant и ещё кое-какие сервисы. Некоторые серверы разнесены по разным хостам (те же контроллеры домена). Многие единичные.

На виртуализацию перешёл давно, как только начал работать в данной организации. До этого был свитч D-Link на 50 портов, лежащий на столе, и два сервака в обычных Tower-корпусах – один на Pentium 3, второй помощнее на на Pentium 4.

На данный момент худо-бедно смог организовать какую-никакую серверную со стойкой 19'', стоечными серверами и ИБП, коммутаторами Cisco. Однако ж, серьёзными вещами, кроме виндовых серверов, не занимался – ESXi и Hyper-V, Linux’ов и BSD не знаю.

В своё время удалось урвать где-то 25 т.р. на покупку VMware vSphere Essentials, поставил на USB-flash, покрутил немного, но так года 3 и не доходят руки заняться.

Прихожу к большому желанию использовать ESXi с общим хранилищем, чтобы можно было делать vMotion – хоть и небольшая организация, но приходится сильно напрягаться, чтобы перезапустить или выключить аппаратный сервер (хост), т.к. пользователи работают с утра до ночи. Особых нагрузок, вроде бы, они не делают – все работают в вордах и экселях, но экселевские таблицы бывают и 50 Мбайт даже в формате xlsb.

Всё это пишу, т.к. мне одному (без эникеев и прочей помощи) приходится делать абсолютно всю работу не только по администрированию указанного выше хозяйства – это считается факультативом и делается вечерами, но и заниматься оф. сайтом, госзакупками, ответами на письма, созданием презентаций и прочих бэйджев, помогать всем и вся, быть на посылках, а также материально ответственным. Поэтому, стараюсь всё максимально автоматизировать, чтобы успевать быстро всё делать.

Вопросы.

1. Можно ли на локальных дисках сделать общее хранилище или надо одного из этих серваков сделать отельным стораджем?

2. Существует ли что-то типа RAID’а по сети, когда диски зеркалируются на разных хостах?

3. Слышал и читал про iSCSI для хранилища – бесплатный вариант самосборного стораджа – может кто посоветовать работающие решения?

How do I need to manage new users on Identity Stores with vRA7?

In vRA6, when I create a users in the Active Directory it became usable automatically in Automation, but with vRA7 I need to "resync" the Identity Store before I can use the new user. Is there any way to set the Active Directory to work as in vRA6?

If I look for the Identity Store using Orchestrator API (to try a forced sync), the Action "getIdentityStoresFromHost" gives me the following error:

Error in (Dynamic Script Module name : getIdentityStoresFromHost#0) Can not perform request to the SSO server. Please contact your System Administrator.

But the SSO server is no longer present in vRA7. How can I force an Active Direcytory sync?

I've recently setup a 3-node + witness (2 nodes contributing storage) vSAN cluster and I'm noticing that on all 3 physical hosts, the 'helper' process is at 100+%RUN.  What could be causing this and how can I troubleshoot to determine the cause?

EDIT:  The one alert I see in the vSAN monitoring tab is 'VSAN Disk Balance' but when I manually kick off a rebalance nothing happens (just hangs at 5%).

After updating a mixture of G7, G8 and G9 VMHosts to 5.5 update 3a and Cookbook release September 2015 (SPP JUN 15). I started having host errors specifically on my G7 hardware. One host went so far as to disconnect from VCenter.

I went the full boat update on the OS to bring it fully in line with HP's recipe. This was the first time hitting drivers in quite a while. So when the first errors started coming in, I immediately suspected the HPSA v106 ( Version:5.5.0.106-1OEM ) which was updated from v50 ( Version:5.5.0.50-1OEM)

I opened tickets with both HP and VMWare

VMWare came back with the first fix which was to upgrade the hpsa driver(hpsa 5.5.0.114-1OEM) which can be downloaded from https://my.vmware.com/web/vmware/details?downloadGroup=DT-ESXI55-HP-HPSA-550114-1OEM&productId=353. however overnight , the errors returned.

HP has suggested back-revving to 5.5.0.74-1(1 Oct 2014) but from a previous discussion here [ Datastore / Disk latency problems with HP ProLiant DL380 G7 - HP Smart Array P410i controller after SPP 2014.09.0 / hpsa-5.0.0.74 update   ]  I believe that was also a bad version.

I'm going to wander down the road a bit and see where it leads and if necessary go back to the 70 or even 50 release

Is it possible to configure it to only share removable media and nothing elese ? It it possible trough GUI if you remove first option "share your local files", but I need to enforce it to all users. As per documentation there are some registry settings to enable share for certain folders, but nothing equialent to the "allow access to removable storage".

I have a datastore I want to create from multiple source luns. Each of the luns is from an SSD storage array, using 6G speed, which allos up to 600MB/sec per lun throughput.

When I try to create the datastore, it seems to concatenate the luns together rather than striping them for improved performance.

The application needs to support 2GB/sec, meaning I need to create a stripe accross 8 of these luns in order to achieve that performance, however, the datastore doesn't seem to allow striping.

Is there a way to fix this so that I can get the necessary performance throughput?

The environment that I'm currently working in has a classification system for emails. It basically means that all emails must have [SEC=UNCLASSIFIED] in the subject line of the email or it is dropped.

Is there a way to edit the email subject lines in vRealize Operation 6.3 alerts and notifications to append [SEC=UNCLASSIFIED]?

I have seen an earlier post (vROPS 6 customizing email alerting) which doesn't answer the question, and I have read the KB (Using custom email templates in VMware vRealize Operations Manager 6.x (2125759) | VMware KB) is a clunky method about building custom templates but with much less granularity and doesn't fit with what I want to do.

I'm running the 6.0 SDK and am attempting to use the HTML bridge (verbatim plugin.xml action to the HTML samples) but I keep getting this error message when I navigate to the plugin's objects view.  Any ideas why I'd be hitting this error on a 5.5 vCenter?  I don't see this error on 6.0 vCenters and I don't see this error if I remove the ActionSpec that uses the className com.vmware.vsphere.client.htmlbridge.HtmlActionDelegate.

Any pointers appreciated! If needed I can try bundling up a sample app to reproduce.

Hey everyone,

I came across some odd behavior and was wondering if you had any insight.  I have a custom action defined that uses the HTML Bridge.  The custom action is visible and enabled when I install it on a 6.0 vCenter but not a 5.5 vCenter. On the 5.5 vCenter the custom action becomes disabled once the solution menu is displayed.  To rule out any issues with resource keys I hard coded all of the labels.  Are there any common issues that would cause an action to always be disabled?  All menu items share the same constraints. I also tried removing the constraints.  Let me know if there's anything else I can provide that would be helpful.

Note: The actionUrl points to a different plugin that serves the HTML content (i.e. test-html-ui serves the HTML content but the action is defined in test-ui's plugin.xml)

Hi All, I am trying to get a heatmap view of average latency for datastores for a the past period of time, importantly I need the average over that period of time (to make things look better :) ). From what I can see in the widget there isn't anything there to select time period. An example is in the top 10 widget that lets you select past period and averages the results for that period (as far as I know its an average). thanks...

I am in need of a script that can go through all my vCloud datastore clusters and tell me what the value for each DSC is for Disk Space threshold Yellow and red.  does anyone have a sample I can look at?

Ideally I would like to be able specify in the script that if the red is not = 300gb or yellow is not = 600gb then give me a list, but I will be stoked for aa list of everything that's configured.

We see some quite high latencies when running backups, what is a *normal* increase to expect? For instance - today we saw latency hit ~200ms on our Sexigraf monitoring (example attached).

We're on the latest version of vSAN, Current Dell firmware, Health plugin is reporting green for the cluster.

I'm looking to upgrade my vCenter servers from 5.5. Update 1b to the latest Update 3e.

I have three vCenter Servers in three sites, all in Linked Mode.

My understanding is that I need to unlink each vCenter from Linked Mode, take a snapshot of each of them, then run the upgrade ISO on each vCenter Server in turn (selecting custom option).

Is this correct? Will I be presented with the SSO screen that asks if this is the first vCenter server in the site or an additional server during the process? If so, what do I select?

I am trying to recall the procedure when updating vCenter while in linked-Mode.  I have 4 vCenter servers running Update 2 and I would like to update them to Update 3.  Do I need to remove them from linked-Mode before updating or can I leave them in Link-Mode and run the update on each of the vCenter servers in the following order:

1. Upgrade vCenter Single Sign-On.

2. Upgrade vSphere Web Client.

3. Upgrade vCenter Inventory Service.

4. Upgrade vCenter Server.

Also, do I need to update one of the vCenter servers before the other?

Any info regarding this process is greatly appreciated.

we are in the progress of moving a lot of VM's from a vSphere 5.5 environment to a vSphere 6 environment and we want to have this done with the least amount of downtime. We have looked at vSphere Replication to manage this job, but then the question come:

has anybody tried this ??

IS it possible to Replicate between 5.x and 6.x ??

AS fare as I have read we will not be able to use compression but is that the only thing ?
