Disconnecting and reconnecting network cable. Connection is lost until VMware is restarted

$

I have a VMware workstation 10.0.3. With this I use an external NIC (not the laptops built in NIC). The reson for this is that my IT dep has made a setting in bios that if LAN is connected, WIFI is disabled. This setting is however not valid when using an external NIC.

So when running the VMware I can connect to the equipment that is on the network. But I have to make sure that the network cable is connected BEFORE I start VMware. If I disconnect and reconnect the the network cable after VMware is started I am unable to re-establish the connection. The only way is to restart VMWare. I have tried to disable/enable the external NIC on the host. At first I thought I had "solved" the connection issue but the connection is lost after some 10-20 seconds. The resason why I disconnect the network cable is because I have several networks that I need to test equipment on and these cannot be connected to the same network. I have tried both with a PCMCIA and a USB NIC, but no difference. Why is this happening?

Vmware View Client - NLA/SSL - Home PC

Hi

We have a number of staff that use the VMWare View Client across our Juniper SSL to access their VMWare View session.

The problem I have is that I'd like to enable NLA and also SSL for the encryption on the VMWare View Desktops. However if I do that the staff can't connect from home with their client and reports a 1033 error.

I know there are some ADM templates to set settings for inside a domain for the VMWare View Client but this won't be possible as they are connecting from home PC's.

Is there a work round to this issue?

We are using VMWare View Server 5.2 withthe latest agents and view clients.

Thanks

Restarting Management Agents

I was requested to restart the Management Agents on an ESXi 5.0 host managed by a vCenter server 5.5.

The action is described on page VMware KB: Restarting the Management agents on an ESXi or ESX host

Can I restart the Management Agents without creating problems to the running VM?

  • If I restart the Management agents will running VMs go on running?
  • Will users accessing the VMs thru the network go on using them?
  • Will users accessing the VM consoles thru the vSphere client go on using the VMs?

Use Mac settings for Mouse instead of Windows?

$

I think this started when moving to VMware Fusion 8.  When I open my Windows 10 VM, I have to click in the Windows 10 VM for it to pick up mouse movements within the VM.  At this point the mouse acceleration seems to be controlled by Windows rather than macOS, making movement and acceleration off.

I just want things the way they were before: I command-tab into VMware, or click on it, and it starts working, with my mouse acceleration being the same as it is in the rest of macOS.  I haven't been able to figure out how to make this setting happen.

View 7.0.2 - scanner redirection doesn't work for TWAIN

$

Hi,

I have problems with TWAIN scanner redirection. Scanner works on local machine, but not inside VDI.

As you can see on the screenshot the scanner is detected and selected in "scanner redirection for vmware horizon" but it is not visible under either "Devices and printers" or "Device Manager". Also if I try to scan in various applications all reports that they can not find scanner.

If select the same scanner under WIA scanner redirection, then scanning will work, but the applications see scaner as "vmware virtual wia scanner".

So here are my questions:

1) why is single scanner shown under both scanner redirection options ?

2) How to tshoot scanner redirection, especially TWAIN part. (It works on local machine)

3) How should I see scanner in VDI if it would work properly with twain scanner redirection ? Would it be shown under "Devices and printers" or inside device manager ?

4) Currently there is only "VMware virtual WIA scanner" under device manager. Should be there also "VMware virtual TWAIN scanner" ? And that this is the source of my problems ?

Tnx

Are VMware Tools needed in HA?

$

Hi,

I am planning VMware HA architecture which will be located in two DC, data will be synced via DB replication (via FC). Environment is planned for ensure HA for application which is running on VM. Due to application vendor restrictions I can't install VMware Tools on VMs. Regarding to that I have a question. Can you provide stable HA solution for application on VM without installing VMware Tools? Does in case of DC failure VMs will be started in second DC? What extra functions I am losing without VMware Tools installed on VM?

I searched information about that on community portal and documentation but I didn't get clear explanation of my questions. I am planning to use VMware version 6.

I would be grateful for clarification on this topic.

Best regards.

Is there a way to push application shortcuts on the client desktop upon first login ?

To cklick on every application avaliable and select create shortcut on desktop is cumbersome for users. I know that I can manually crate icons trough GPO but this is less than ideal.

Ubuntu 14.04 not seeing entire VM disk

$

Hello,

My ubuntu 14.04 VM isn't seeing the entire disk for some reason. If I go into the "virtual Machine Settings" and go to the disk, here's what it says:

Capacity

Current size: 3.9 GB

System free: 373.2 GB

Maximum size: 20 GB

But when I go into ubuntu and look in the system monitor, it says that I have a total of 4.2 GB, used 3.7GB and only have 207.5MB free.

This clearly isn't right. What's going on? This basically means my VM is unusable for all intents and purposes.

My host OS is Windows 10.

Thanks

The most basic VCENTER question

$

My first "most basic" question was answered perfectly and quickly over in the VSAN section, so now I'll venture over here and ask another!

I admit, this will sound stupid, but here goes: how do I install VCENTER onto a VSAN, when you have to have VCENTER up and running in order to create a VSAN?

Let's assume I have 4 brand spankin' new ESXi hosts with local storage:

1x ssd for ESXi (onboard sata controller)

1x ssd for cache (on LSI controller in pass-thru mode)

3x hdd for capacity (on LSI controller in pass-thru mode)

ESXi 6.02U is installed on each host, each host can see the 4 drives on the LSI card, and I can get logged into each host.

So, we're all setup and ready to go.

Now what? Do I:

  • Create a datastore on one ESXi OS drive, install VCENTER on that, create a datacenter, then a vsan-enabled cluster, then a VSAN datastore (by claiming the disks from all 4 hosts), divide it up as necessary, and then migrate the VCENTER server storage to the appropriate VSAN datastore?
  • Create a VSAN datastore from the CLI (esxcli vsan cluster new, esxcli vsan storage add -s SSD-DISK-ID -d HDD-DISK-ID), and then install VCENTER on that vsan?
  • Or...???

Thanks...I think I should probably know the answer to this, but it eludes me.

When I google the error message It always shows something related to the backup duration more than a day but in this case it only takes 2 hours.

Workstation Pro 12.1.1 Update for 7-Zip (7za.exe) Planned?

Hi everyone,

I hope you are well today.

As you know last month a security update (v16.00) was made available for 7-Zip:

http://blog.talosintel.com/2016/05/multiple-7-zip-vulnerabilities.html

I have VMware Workstation 12.1.1 installed but it still has version 9.20 of 7za.exe installed located at the following directory path: C:\Program Files (x86)\VMware

Is VMware affected by the issues raised in the above mentioned blog post? If so, is this older .exe file likely to be replaced in an upcoming update to VMware?

Apologies if the appropriate actions for updating this file in a future update are already in progress. Many thanks in advance for your time. Have a good day.

Users are logging into multiple sessions even though they are not allowed to..

Does anyone know what would cause the SAME user to login into multiples sessions even though we don't allow multiple logins in our View environment?

Horizon client on windows - handling lock/logout/... events

Currently we have thin clients which are domain joined and when the user log in it is then automatically logged into virtual desktop.

Is it possible to configure Horizon client in a way that when you do logout from VDI that you are also logged out from TC ? And similar if user locks VDI trough start menu that the client also locks ?

What is otherwise the best option to configure Windows thin clients to work seamlessly with horizon and without any local desktop ? Especially when users are using ctr-alt-del key combination or doing lock/logoff. Zero clients are really nice here and give you the best local desktop experience, but they lack on other areas.

Tnx

Will storage vmotion work while moving VMs from ESXi 5.0 datastore cluster to new ESXi 6.0 hosts datastore cluster : without powering off the VMs ?

Will storage vmotion work while moving VMs from ESXi 5.0 datastore cluster to new ESXi 6.0 hosts datastore cluster : without powering off the VMs ?

I am assuming that i am running Vcenter 6 with all these ESXi 5.0 and ESXi 6.0 hosts in the same hosts cluster.

You cannot change the virtual machine's storage placement and its execution host at the same time on this "Source" host

Hello,

Please i have a problem to do a vMotion from host "Rack" (ESXI 5.0, VM version 8, VMFS 5.54) to LAME BLASE server (ESXI 6.0, VM version 11, VMFS 5.61). I added the Rack host to the vCenter and tried to migrate a VM test but got the error message:

The virtual machine requires hardware features that are unsupported or disabled on the target host: """""""""""""* General incompatibilities "
If possible, use a cluster with Enhanced vMotion Compatibility (EVC) enabled; see KB article 1003212.
CPUID details: incompatibility at level 0x1 register 'ecx'.
Host bits: 0110:0010:1101:1000:0011:0010:0000:0011
Required: x000:x01x:10x1:1xx0:xx10:xx1x:xx0x:xx11

It seems incompatible VM hardware, as solution we need to download and install the right VM harware to perform the migration, i'm investigate this issue.

It was a CPU problem version, i enabled the EVC by adding the source host to a new cluster with EVC enabled https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DSfzafr1ndA an now i don't have the above error message but another error message:

You cannot change the virtual machine's storage placement and its execution host at the same time on this "Source" host 'xxx.yyy.zzz.www'.

I tried to do only storage vMotion or resource vMotion but i see only the source host not the destination host !

Can someone helps me please !

Regards.
