Regarding space reclaim on thin-provision virtual disk

Hello,

I have several question Regarding space reclaim on thin-provision virtual disk, can somebody help?

My questions are:

1、Sometime i delete files inside virtual machine, i see theoccupiedcapacity of the virtual disk decrease in VMFS datastore without manual reclaim, but usually it does not happen(the occupied capacity of the virtual disk does not decrease), why ?

2、According to the statement(Plese look at 1.png), does it mean we can do virtual disk shrink when the VM is running, although the VM will stop responding ? Will the VM resume running after the reclaim process?

3、How to do virtual disk export/import for space reclaim (Plese look at 2.png) ?

Hi All,

Is there any way to expose snapshots in WSX? This thing is EXACTLY what I need if it only had snapshot support.

A quick note to let you know that an Release Notes Update (06 October 2016) has been posted to the VMware Validated Design for SDDC 3.0 to address an issue that may occur when deploying blueprints from vRealize Automation.

New vRealize Automation blueprint deployment fails with the error “The maximum number of transaction retry attempts, 40, was reached”

The following exception is published to the log file.

System.Data.Services.DataServiceException: Error requesting machine. ---> System.Reflection.TargetInvocationException: Exception has been thrown by the target of an invocation. ---> System.Data.Services.DataServiceException: Error requesting machine. ---> DynamicOps.Common.RetryTransactionException: The maximum number of transaction retry attempts, 40, was reached. ---> System.Data.EntityCommandExecutionException: An error occurred while executing the command definition. See the inner exception for details. ---> System.Data.SqlClient.SqlException: Timeout expired. The timeout period elapsed prior to completion of the operation or the server is not responding. ---> System.ComponentModel.Win32Exception: The wait operation timed out

Workaround: Run the SQL query sp_updatestats against the Microsoft SQL Server database used by vRealize Automation.

Internet access through VMware Player

Hi

I don't have my main computer with Windows 10 on internet but it would be handy to be able to go online. Can VMware Player mount a Linux Lite dist to go online with while it's still blocked for Windows 10?

Thanks

VMware Validated Design for Micro-Segmentation 3.0 Architecture and Planning Documentation Available

The VMware Validated Design for Micro-Segmentation 3.0 is new specialized use-case design. This design implements a subset of the complete SDDC design specifically for the organizations looking to implement and realize the benefits of micro-segmentation.

Micro-segmentation establishes the distribution of firewall and isolation policies throughout the data center, creating “microsegments” which can block communication between workloads - even those within the same network segment

The design provides an approach to start with the micro-segmentation capabilities in your datacenter and the flexibility to grow to the full VMware Validated Design for SDDC design at a later stage.

As of 06 October 2016 the architecture and planning documentation for the VMware Validated Design for Micro-Segmentation 3.0 are generally available. The implementation and operations documentation is forthcoming.

temperamental set-vmhostnetwork command

Hi All,

I have an esxi postscript, all works but when setting the dns its hit and miss, no errors are thrown but the DNS entries don't appear on the esxi host causing the addition of syslog to fail as it cant resolve the hostname, if I run the same command or even the whole script again it will work, I've added a sleep entry after adding the host to  vcenter in case it was a timing thing.  Any ideas on what could be causing this or a way around the issue?

Add-VMHost -Name $esx -Location $cluster -User $credentials.UserName -Password $credentials.GetNetworkCredential().Password -RunAsync -force

Write-Host -ForegroundColor GREEN "Adding ESXi host $esxi to vCenter"

#

sleep -s 10

#

#Set DNS

Write-Host -ForegroundColor GREEN "Adding DNS Entries $dns1,$dns2 on vmHost $esxi"

Get-VMHost $esx | Get-VMHostNetwork | Set-VMHostNetwork -DnsAddress $dns1,$dns2

VC 6.5 Install failure - identity management service error on first boot

Is anyone else experiencing a failure when installing VC 6.5?  I have this occuring when installing using the CLI installer, and when deploying the OVA using the ESXi web client.

The version of VC is 6.5.0 build 4240420, the recent release candidate.

The exception report looks like:

Encountered an internal error. Traceback (most recent call last): File "/usr/lib/vmidentity/firstboot/vmidentity-firstboot.py", line 2017, in main vmidentityFB.boot() File "/usr/lib/vmidentity/firstboot/vmidentity-firstboot.py", line 349, in boot self.configureSTS(self.__stsRetryCount, self.__stsRetryInterval) File "/usr/lib/vmidentity/firstboot/vmidentity-firstboot.py", line 1478, in configureSTS self.startSTSService() File "/usr/lib/vmidentity/firstboot/vmidentity-firstboot.py", line 1140, in startSTSService returnCode = self.startService(self.__sts_service_name, self.__stsRetryCount * self.__stsRetryInterval) File "/usr/lib/vmidentity/firstboot/vmidentity-firstboot.py", line 88, in startService return service_start(svc_name, wait_time) File "/usr/lib/vmware/site-packages/cis/utils.py", line 784, in service_start raise ServiceStartException(svc_name) ServiceStartException: { "resolution": null, "detail": [ { "args": [ "vmware-stsd" ], "id": "install.ciscommon.service.failstart", "localized": "An error occurred while starting service 'vmware-stsd'", "translatable": "An error occurred while starting service '%(0)s'" } ], "componentKey": null, "problemId": null }

My group and I am curious to hear whether or not anyone else is experience this and if there are any workarounds.

Thanks!

How to limit actions in gettingStartedView by user privilege?

Hi all,

Happy to be back on vSphere Web Client development again.  In our solution we have helpful links to actions for users on the getting started pages.  Some actions are not available to Read Only users.  How do I hide those actions in actionDisplayInfos?

vCenter Permissions to Individual VMs

$

Thanks in advance for any assistance!

I'm trying to delegate permissions to a single VM to allow an application administrator vCenter and VM access.  When I set the user up as a Virtual Machine Administrator to the VM only, the user cannot see the VM in the VIC client (they cannot see the cluster or resource pool the VM is a member of either).  The only way I can get this to work is to give them read permissions to the container above the VM, in this case a resource pool.  Obviously they only have read access to all the other VMs in that resource pool but I would prefer if they could only see the VM they have permissions to.  Am I missing something or is this not possible?

I've never assign permissions the granular before and I guess I just assumed, based on my research, vCenter used an access base enumeration algorithm but my assumption is probably wrong (they usually are).

Thanks!
