No vCenter Operations Manager extension info for "IP" was collected from a vCenter Server

Hello,

I just started with a clean install of the vCloud Usage Meter 3.4.

The first couple of collections went fine but now it fails due to vCenter Operations Manager.

We are still using the Operations manager, so it is not needed to be removed the Usage meter doe see the version of vCOPS (5.8.4.2199700.

Interact with ssh session?

I'd like to domain join (realm join) a newly deployed Linux VM.  The only way I can think to do this is run realm join via SSH, but that prompts for a password rather than taking it as an argument (in other words, it does the right thing).  Can I somehow send text over the pipe?

And assuming that I can do that, how can I convert a SecureString to a string?  I assume that's actually not possible, so I'm hosed on this method too.

How are other people domain joining Linux VMs deployed with vRO?

Why is the Get-ScsiLun RuntimeName field always empty in PowerCLI 6.0 and how do I get a LunID, now?

I'm using PowerCLI 6.0 Release 2 and am testing my 5.5 scripts to make sure they still work ok with 6.0.

The more I look at this more I think it's an ESXi 6.0 problem - (ESXi 6.0 Update 1a)

I used a great script by Luc Dekens which tells you how to get a LunID using PowerCLI

The making of a New-VIProperty called lunID - LucD notes

This script is dependent on the RuntimeName field returned from the Get-ScsiLun cmdlet, which is now always blank in PowerCLI 6.0.

Is there another way to get the LunID?

I can see the LunID(s) when I VI Client into the host and look at the Storage adapters.

Basic steps:

$scsiList = get-vmHost -vm $vmName | get-scsiLun

$scsiList | select RuntimeName

$scsiList | fl

RuntimeName always comes back blank, where it used to look like  vmhba0:C2:T0:L11

    where L11 is the LunID

Screenshot is enclosed.

Thanks,

Maureen

vSphere 6 POC with PSC in HA (Replication) Mode

Hello,

At the moment I’m creating a fully HA vSphere 6 POC.

  • PSC in HA Mode behind KB
  • vCenter as MSCS
  • vCenter DB on SQL MSCS

I have a question about the behavior of the PSC in HA Mode.

I used this Guide for Setup: http://kb.vmware.com/kb/2113085

It Seems that the LB and the HA works fine but one behavior is strange:

What I did:

  • Powered off primary PSC
  • Tested C# Client
  • Tested PowerCLI
  • Tested WebClient

Results

  • All Existing and new Connection work fine except for WebClient
    • Existing Session in WebClient works except for SSO Konfig
    • New Connection to WebClient fails (HTTP-Error: 403, Status: BadRequest, Unterstatus: Issuer not recognized..)
    • After restart of WebClient Service everything works fine

Did anyone even try this?

Has anyone tested PSC HA with KEMP Loadmaster?

Update:

The same problem occurs after failback to the powered off PSC Node

-> Restart of WebClient Service works again

Need help with script to find vm's by IP

Looking for a script that will match vm's to IP's but need to be able to search several ip's at once.

I have put this together from scripts on the net, which works well to search one IP at a time:

$match_address = Read-Host "Enter IP address to find"

Get-VM | %{

  $vmips = $_.Guest.IPAddress

  foreach($ip in $vmips) {

  if ($ip -like $match_address) {

  "Found VM with matching address: {0}" -f $_.Name

  }

  }

  }

But would need to be able to enter several IP's from different subnets into the $match_address and have the script search for a match for each ip.

I have installed vCenter 6.0 and when I create a data-center  and then try to add host I get license errors. The ESXi 5.5 hosts are already licensed. I have vCenter 6.0 Essentials which allows for 3 hosts. How can I add the existing host and I was told by VMware that vCenter 6.0 can manage ESXi 5.5 hosts.Error when adding ESXi 5.5 host to vCenter 6.0.PNG

Separate Vcenter and Database Server

Hello,

we are running a Vcenter Server 5.5 with the default MS-SQL Server Express database.

We have now started a project to consolidate all our other SQL-Express databases on a MS-SQL Server Standard Edition, so that we have better monitoring and backup options.

Is this a recommended strategy for the Vcenter-Database? What happend with the Vcenter for example, if I need to recover the database to an older version (for example a few hours or one day ago)?

Are there any Best Practice Guides available?

Thanks.

Cannot log into host from vSphere client

Hi,

I have an issue where I cannot log in to my hosts from the vSphere client. This is the error message:

vpshere-client-log-in-issue.PNG

I also cannot ssh to the client. Attempting to connect via ssh returns "Network error. Connection refused.

The hosts are up and all my virtual machines are running. I am using the correct credentials. I am able to log in with the vSphere client to my vCenter. This issue is only with my attempts to connect directly to the hosts.

Can anyone help?

Zero client tera1 and View 6.2

Hello community,

Please can someone tell me if they are successfully connecting to View 6.2 via a zero client tera1 chip?

I won't bore you all with the details, but we are finalising the steps before upgrading the View environment to 6.2 and just want to check if all our tera1 chip zero clients (Wyse P20) are going to work properly.   I see that the last supported firmware for the tera1 chip is 4.7.1, although the only supported firmware for View 6.2 is 4.8, which we cant use on 80% of my VDI estate.

The annoyance here is that when we bought the P20s over 4 years ago, they were meant to have a 6-7 year shelf life and although they all work well on 6.1 (I know that's unsupported on firmware 4.7.1 as well).  Either way, we want to get a good few more years out of the (mostly) trusty tera1 zero clients.

Thanks....

vRealize Operations Manager 6.0.1: Unable to identify trends

$

Hello,

I am pretty new to vRealize Operations Manager. We are currently running 6.0.1 of this product and I primarily use it to make capacity projections and keep an eye on our hosts and guests. Recently we had a power outage. Since the outage I have been unable to use any of the graphs for any of my already created projects in the projects tab. When I attempt to use one of my projects I receive the error: "Unable to identify a trend in historical analysis". How often is historical data collected? Is this something I can control and/or manipulate and speed up? Essentially, I want to know how long before I can use the projects I previously created to make projections again.

Any help or insight would be greatly appreciated!

VM guest fails to boot with error "Device 'Bootstrap' is not available"

$

I have an old linux (kernel 2.2x) server that we virtualized a few years ago that I am trying to transition to an ESXi 6.0U1a server.  It was initially created with VMware Workstation version 6.  The first issue I came across was that the Virtual Hardware version needed to be upgraded.  Trying to make as little change as possible to the VM to keep it running but upgrading to something supported by our entire infrastructure, I upgraded to hardware version 7 based on this: VMware KB: ESXi/ESX hosts and compatible virtual machine hardware versions list.

After upgrading the virtual hardware it still worked on VMware Workstation 12.  But after moving it to the ESXi 6.0U1a server it fails to start with the error "Device 'Bootstrap' is not available".  I was unable to find any search results based on this error message.  With the VM working in workstation and as I have several ESXi servers running different versions I decided to try it on the older servers.  The VM boots fine on ESXi 4.1U3.  On ESXi 5.5U3 it fails to boot with a different error message: "Failed to start the virtual machine (error -18)".  That led me to this: VMware KB: The virtual machine fails to start with the error: msg.vmx.poweron.failedErrorCodewhich suggests looking at the VM's .vmx file.  One of the linked articles talks about deleting the .vmx file and then recreating the VM utilizing the existing disks.

I decided to attempt this route and renamed the original .vmx file, and then recreated the VM from the vSphere Client on the ESXi 6.0U1a server.  Trying to start the newly created VM results in the exact same error message I started with: "Device 'Bootstrap' is not available".  The event log on the server has an error that is probably more pertinent: "Cannot open the configuration file" (Identical error message for both .vmx files)  If I SSH into the server I am able to view/edit the .vmx file, so I am really confused at what is going on.

Any help?

Rob

Help with SSO

Horizon Client 3.5.2 on windows 7 or connecting from iPad with version 3.5.1.  Login with current user and it connects with windows creds to connect to the connection server with no issues.  Connecting to the vm it is asking for credentials to login.  Am I wrong in thinking that I should be able to connect to the vm without entering domain credentials?  I've been told it should work but it's been 2 months and I still haven't found a solution.  Looking for SSO solution to auto login to windows 7 vm.  Thanks in advance.

Inline WAN Opt or AV Appliance

Hey Everyone,

I have a Silver Peak VX (caching appliance) and have been trying to figure out how best to deploy it in my VDC. Basically, I need all inbound and outbound traffic on my Org VDC Networks to pass through it. It's a tiny VDC so I'm not using vApp networking.

VMware's documentation explicitly illustrates this use-case here, but I'm missing something: I don't understand how to put the illustrated appliance inline between my Org Networks and my Edge Gateway

Yes, I could work plop it on my Org Network and set it as the lowest-metric default gateway for all my VMs, but that is a recipe for asymmetric routing problems.

I've seen a bunch of diagrams from Silver Peak, Riverbed et tal on how to do this but they never venture into specifics on *how* you're supposed to route that out. If anyone has any insight or a config example, I'd really appreciate it!

importing CA root certs into vRA appliance keystore

$

I posted this originally in a different thread and decided to create a new one for it since it was only tangentially related to where I posted before.  I'm using the vRA appliance, and as near as I can tell the default keystore doesn't include any generally accepted root CA certificates.  I'm using Google apps as our outbound email server, and since the root cert they used isn't in the keystore I'm forced to allow self-signed certificates.  This is a lab server so I'm only a little bothered by that, but let's say I want to send an email via an Orchestrator flow--the ootb send notification flow doesn't provide any option for trusting all roots and just refuses to do anything at all.  I crossed my fingers and did vcac-config import-certificate, but there was no noticeable effect after restarting.  I even tried importing cacerts from my workstation's Java install, but I haven't been able to guess the keystore password.  The system admin and hardening guides only talk about replacing certificates for the various vRA components, and I'm frankly at a loss for what to try next.  The integrated vRO installation also maintains a keystore (which also lacks any root certs), but the config tool for Orchestrator at least allows you to import certs, even if only one at a time.  Is there a similar tool for vRA itself, or is the default keystore password in some KB article I haven't been able to locate yet?
