Assigning 5.5 hosts/licences to new vCentre 6 Server

$

Hi,

Our old vCenter server (v5.5) was on a VM and unfortunately that was damaged beyond salvage, and is now gone. The old vCentre 5.5 server controlled 3 ESXi 5.5 hosts, all with 5.5 licences.

We have now built a new vCentre server (v 6.0) with the same IP address as the old vCentre 5.5 (again as a VM).

When trying to add a host (one of the 3 existing 5.5 hosts) to the new vCentre 6, we get these two warnings:

  • The selected license is part of the inventory of another vCenter Server system. Assigning this license will make it part of the inventories of multiple vCenter Server systems resulting in a non-compliant licensing configuration.
  • To restore the compliance, remove the license from its original vCenter Server system after you complete this wizard.

We also get this message:

  • Cannot decode the licensed features on the host before it is added to vCenter Server. You might be unable to assign the selected license, because of unsupported features in use or some features might become unavailable after you assign the license.

Question: should I proceed to add the existing 5.5 hosts and their 5.5 licences to the new vCentre 6 server, or is that not advisable?

Basically we’re stuck at the point where we’re not sure whether to add the 3 existing 5.5 hosts for fear of losing data by invalidating the licences somehow – please advise!

Many thanks!

/3gb boot.ini option?

I'm trying to P2V an old 2003 SP2 server with 4gb of ram. We have no other option than to P2V for various reasons...

The server is SQL and has the /3gb option set in the boot.ini, it physically has 4gb of ram.

I'm hitting this bug VMware KB: VMware vCenter Converter fails at 98% with the error: unable to create which ok I can take the option out but can I put it back after the P2V?

It links to another article VMware KB: Running Microsoft Windows 2003 32-bit guest operating systems with the /3GB switch in boot.ini results in… but is for ESX 4 and we're on 5.5.

Can I just add the option back and no more need for the fix or is there another way to give the memory back after the P2V, apparently it already struggles with the amount of ram available.

Hi,

I have installed the trial for vm workstation pro 12 on a lenovo desktop with windows 7 enterprise.

This device has a working parallel port that we use for parallel license dongle.

However, after I added the parallel port to the vm that I installed (also win 7 enterprise), when starting it says:

"Cannot connect the virtual device parallel0 because no corresponding device is available on the host."

Please assist since this is stopping us from successfully testing and purchasing the software.

Thanks.

shared virtual disk in win 7 64

Hi, I got a problem with ussing Shared Virtual Disk in Win 7 64 Virtual Machine. (Esxi 6.0)

- I have a SSD storage (450Gb), and i creat 2 VM ussing Win 7 64 on it. (40Gb for 2 VM , and ~400Gb not ussing)

- I creat a virtual disk (A disk) with Thick Provision Eager Zeroed option (400Gb). Set SCSI controller to "Virtual" in both VM.

- Add "A disk" to VM 1, power on VM1 and Format "A disk" as "D:" volume (NTFS).

- Add "A disk" to VM2, power on VM2 and i see "A disk" as "D:" too. That's ok, im making D Volume as a share Folder where both VM can read and write so fast, no need through Ethenet.

- BUT, i got a proplem here, when i make a new Folder("Test Folder") in D volume in VM1 , it not show in VM2 (the same when i try with VM2) , but when i restart VM2 , i see "Test Folder" here.

- i tried to Set SCSI controler to Physic, add SCSI(x:y) = multi writer .... but it not work correctly. (I hope it work like a share volume in windows).

Please, give me any help. Thanks so muchhhh. I tried it in 1 week, seem its too difficult for me.

Tracking replicated data size

Hello, we have about 100 VMs replication using SRM and VR 5.1. Is there a way to track how much changes are being replicated daily per VM basis? The SRM UI shows the last sync size but I'm looking for aggregated daily transfer amount. Any help appreciated.

Vix 1.15.1 vmrun "start" "nogui" fails with "The operation was cancelled" on non-commercial VMware Player

Hi,

I've been using "vmrun" for some time now to launch my VM non-interactively using VMware Player under the non-commercial license.  I normally launch my VM with:

vmrun start my-vm.vmx nogui

I recently upgraded to VMware Workstation Player 12.0.1 and VIX 1.15.1.  Now when I try to start it using VIX 1.15.1, I get the following error output:

Error: The operation was cancelled.

When I look in the VMware log, I see the following text:

2015-11-05T17:39:45.687Z| vmx| I125: [msg.License.no_valid_license_see_website] Cannot find a license key to unlock this version of VMware Workstation.
2015-11-05T17:39:45.687Z| vmx| I125+ Go to our web site at "http://vmware.com/info?id=27&build=3160714" to obtain a valid license key.
2015-11-05T17:39:45.687Z| vmx| I125: ----------------------------------------
2015-11-05T17:39:45.696Z| vmx| I125: LICENSE no valid one found
2015-11-05T17:39:45.696Z| vmx| I125: Module 'License' power on failed.

However, I have already completed the license dialog box shown when VMware Player was first launched, and provided my email address.  Launching VMware Player no longer how the license dialog and the application operates fine.

If I execute the "vmrun" command with the "gui" argument instead, it starts VMware Player propertly and my VM runs fine.   However, I don't *want* the VMware Player interface to appear - the VM is a server VM.

Is this change intentional or a bug?

TIA,

James Bray

ESXi 5.5 Update 3: Deleting Snapshot Crashes VM: Unexpected signal: 11.

After upgrading from ESXi 5.5 Update 2 to Update 3, deleting snapshot randomly crashed virtual machines.  Updating VMware tools didn't help.  No crashing problems before with snapshots on the same server for the last ~3 years.  Problem started with Update 3.

So far, this has happened with Windows XP, 2003, 2008R2 OS with updated VMware Tools.

Here is an example of one of the systems that just crashed right after a snapshot delete:

First time with VSAN

If I have 6 hosts with a mix of SSDs and rotating drives, is it possible to force specific VMs to use the SSDs or do I need to create a separate VSAN cluster?

6 hosts:

Host 1-3 has 1 SSDs and 8 rotating each

Host 4-6 has all SSDs

Thanks

Timed out black screen post deployement

We are creating a SuSe appliance using VMware studio. After the ova is created, we deploy it and select the power on after deployed option.

The issue we are facing is when user goes away from the console and comes back later, the console screen is timed out (empty black screen). It requires the user to click the console to bring back the screen. Simply opening the console and hovering over the console doesn't fix it.

Is there any way to stop this behavior?

Appreciate the help!

vSphere java SDK - ignore certificates

$

I am using the vSphere 6.0 Java SDK, and I know when running the Java SDK examples it is possible to make it ignore certificates by passing the --ignorecerts on the run.sh command line. I presume com.vmware.common.Main.java takes that and performs some operation to do the trick before running the example code, but it is not clear to me how. I was hoping com.vmware.common.Main.java was avail, but only the compiled file is. I tried running Main.trustAll() in my test code, but it did not seem to do anything.

Any suggestion?

Hi All,

VMwareViewComposerReplicaFolder - Visible?

$

Has anyone ever come across the "VMwareViewComposerReplicaFolder" being visible in VCenter? We have 2 VCenters and 2 View Composer instances, 1 linked to each (we call them DC1 and DC2). In DC1, VMs and Templates view, the folder is visible in VCenter, in DC2 it isn't. I've checked my client setting and "Show View Composer virtual machines" is indeed unchecked. I checked with a co-worker's machine, to make sure it isn't something unique to me, and he sees it as well.

What's odd is, in the thick client, DC1 shows the folder and DC2 does not. When I go in through the Web Client, both DCs show the folder.

It's not a problem really, just kind of weird. I think it may be linked to some work support did with me on orphaned Composer VMs, but, I'm not sure which. If someone's see this behavior before and has something I could use to look further into it, that would be great.

Thanks.

Anyone succesfull with 6.0.0

I have been working all day on a single machine standard and clean MS Windows 7 64bit enterprise.

This OS is not uncommon but spells a world of trouble for VMWare Converter standalone 6.0.0.

To the point that makes me wonder if this production software. I'm just posting in the many many error messages I have seen throughout the day.

I managed to find workarounds for most of the issues untill I hit

FAILED: Unable to create '\\.\vstor2-mntapi20-shared-C37ABC700000F015000000000C00

This turns out to be a show stopper. There is no way of fixing this.

Which made me wonder. What OS is VMWare Converter supposed to support? It is not MS WIndows 7 for sure.

Is this maybe only for server OS software? Not desktop OS.

Unable to install VMware Tools on Windows 10

Having trouble installing VMware Tools on a Win10 Enterprise VM (vSphere 5.5). Install initiates then never reports anything beyond that. Is there something special that needs to be done to make this work?

-Thanks

Also have installed the Update Manager plugin which is reporting compliance state incompatible.
