VMware Tools re-install or upgrade creates duplicate VMCI Host driver in Windows 2016 server

$

I have noticed that if I re-install/upgrade VMware tools from the 64bit installer within Windows Server 2016 it creates an additional instance of the VMCI host driver in device manager.

The extra driver creates a Warning event  in the Windows system log = VMCI: Failed to create device (status=0xc0000035) Source vmci EventID: 2.

While troubleshooting the event, I removed and re-installed the VMware tools.  This created a third instance of the driver and a second instance of the System Log warning.

I noticed that the extra devices (displaying the Bang exclamation for not functioning hardware) showed in their properties window that the driver failed due to "duplicate name exists".

Workaround = In troubleshooting on a non-vital system, I right clicked and un-installed the errored instances of the VMCI Host driver (duplicates) and left the copy that the driver loaded correctly.

Upon restart the System log warning did not return and the normal VMware VMCI Host Device driver loaded normally.

Is this problem created by the VMCI Host driver being locked by the windows system during re-install/un-install?

Reason for the question is to possibly have the issue corrected in future revisions of the VMWare tools installer so manual removal of the erred drivers is not required.

Thank you.

vCenter linked mode node domain rejoin?

$

We cannot login username and password to a few of our Linked Mode vCenters. When trying to disjoin and rejoin the node, I receive this error.

"There is already a native AD IDS or LDAP AD IDS registered"

A google search reveals this KB that says to disjoin from the command line but to take snapshots of all your vCenters which makes me a little nervous.

My question is, could disjoining a single node affect the upstream partner or all the linked vCenters?

VixDiskLib_Open fails in VDDK 7.0 using a vmPath in the vmxSpec

$

With VDDK 6.7.3 I could successfully call VixDiskLib_Open using a vmPath in the vmxSpec. In 7.0 I get the following errors:

VixDiskLib: VixDiskLib_OpenEx: Open a disk.

VixDiskLib: VixDiskLib_OpenEx: Failed to start session. Invalid search specifier: vmPath:/Shavlik/vm/ESXI6.7-QA-W2K16X64-1 at 5736.

VixDiskLib: VixDiskLib_Open: Cannot open disk [ESXi6.7] ESXI6.7-W2K16X64-1/ESXI6.7-W2K16X64-1-000002.vmdk. Error 1 (Unknown error) at 5813.

If I use a moref in the vmxSpec in 7.0, VixDiskLib_Open succeeds.

Was the ability to specify a vmPath in the vmxSpec deliberately removed in 7.0 or is this a bug that will be fixed?

How to choose approprate CPU for new esx servers??

$

I'm researching new esx vsphere host servers for one place I work.

I'm planning Proliant Gen10 DL360 host servers with the 32GB SD storage for VMware, at least 8 NICs, 128 or 192 GB RAM apiece, nothing else.

Simple basic Essentials Plus 3-host setup with a basic iSCSI SAN.

I'm puzzled how to choose which processor to put in it.

We only need maybe at least 10 cores per CPU (based on current usage), not too many more so Windows Server costs don't become exce$$ively outrageou$, with 2 physical CPUs per host.

I know the Proliant Gen10s are on the HCL as follows:

Proliant Gen10 with:

Xeon Gold, Silver, Platinum, Bronze

Xeon E-2200, 4,6,8 core

How do I appropriately choose which processor to get??

I'm sure it has to be one of the Xeon metal flavors but how do I know even which ones to consider??????

I assume Gold costs the most and Bronze the least.

Thank you, Tom

vSphere Replication 8.2 to 8.3 (in place upgrade) - No Seamless disk re-sizing for you

$

Folks:

Once I read the "What's New" for the 8.3 vSphere Replication release.... this was manna from heaven-

Seamless disk re-sizing. You can increase the virtual disks of virtual machines that are configured for replication, without interruption of ongoing replication. The virtual disk on the target site will be automatically resized. For more information about the feature, see Increasing the Size of Replicated Virtual Disks.

I immediately did a in place upgrade from 8.2 to 8.3....... but no Seamless disk re-sizing for me!

After comparing the upgraded 8.3 hbrsvr.xml file to a native 8.3 hbrsvr.xml file the settings to enable "Seamless disk re-sizing" are missing. VMware support suggested adding these missing options to the .xml file. That did not enable the ability to do seamless disk re-sizing.

Vmware support unfortunately is now suggesting a forklift upgrade (replacing my current VR appliances with a "native" 8.3 version).

I hope you have better luck.

Horizon Client 5.4.2 Display scaling option missing

Our Patchmanagement updated the Horizon Clients on our Windows 10 machines to Version 5.4.2 build 15936851 and now the the option for display scaling is missing in the menu. We retested with an older Version in the same environment and could see this option in the menu after connecting to the vm. With 5.4.2 this option is gone. Since many of our users work with Microsoft Surfaces they are unable to work on the Windows 7 machines in the VDI environment without the display scaling.

The Surface users had to disable display scaling and re-enableit to get the right resolution they could work with. Since this option is now missing, they are unable to work. We already tried to enable and siable the option in the Horizon Client setting for the pool, but this didn´t help.

Do you have a solution for us, without downgrading every Horizon Client on the affected machines manually? UWP Version is not an option for us.

Ticket is open, hopefully we find a solution here earlier.

Thx, Michael Theis

Trouble installing ESXI on new DL20 Gen10

I've spent too many hours attempting to set this install up and need some help. This is my first HP proliant server (Proliant DL20 Gen10) and therefore first time using any integrated utilities to setup the system, OS and storage...Here are the two main issues I'm running into and then I'll get into how I have everything setup.

esxi-install-error.png

Error via Assisted Install method (shown above)

esxi-install-nodrives.png

No drives detected via load ISO from virtual drive (shown above)

Install ISO: VMware-ESXi-6.7.0-Update2-13006603-HPE-Gen9plus-670.U2.10.4.1.8-Apr2019

SPP Status: Can't install, can't load ISO, planning on doing so after ESXI install (spp-2019.03.0-SPP2019030.2019_0206.85)

Physical Drives: KINGSTON SA400S3 120GB (Qty: 2), Samsung SSD 860 1TB (Qty: 2)

Each setup in a RAID 1 using the RAID configuration tool in Intelligent Provisioning (first attempts provisioned through UEFI BIOS and same result, tore down and reprovisioned in IProv)

IProv-raidsetup.png

Raid configuration (shown above)

Firmware appears to be up to date as well...(shown above)

As I mentioned, I've attempted to install via Assisted Install by provisioning through Intelligent Provisioning portal, and also by loading the ISO from virtual drive and booting from it. Both methods yield different errors/issues and I'm really hoping that it's not because I am using non HP drives because their products are overpriced and do not match my eventual design plan. Any help in pointing me in the right direction would be appreciated. Thanks so much.

Install and upgrade to new environment

Hello all, we have setup a new environment a couple of months ago and have migrated a few customers from the old to the new.  I attended NSX class many years ago but I know software has changed and instructions also.  Our old environment is vsphere 5.5, vcloud 9.1.0 with nsx version 6.3.6.  The new environment is vsphere 6.7 on vxrails and we are looking to install the datacenter version of the new NSX.  Our plan is to step away from vcloud and look into other like style software.  I have 2 major questions.  First, if memory serves me correctly from training a couple years ago, during the install you had to be cautious when implementing the firewall version piece of NSX because you could firewall off your ESXi hosts and disconnect everything.  Not sure if this is still the case.  The second question is if we already have customers on the new environment and go to setup the new data-center version of NSX, will we interrupt connections for these customers?  I know there will probably be questions I have not provided information for, ask away if needed.

Thanks for any help provided in advance!

Installed App Volumes Agent a couple of days ago, App-V was working. As soon as I attach a App Stack, App-V applications folder structure will show up in %localappdata%\Microsoft\Appv\VFS, but none of the actual files of the application will. Anyone experienced this?

VMWare Redundant VDI

$

Hi,

I have some questions about redundant VDI.

Currently, VDI takes about 20 seconds to failover. Is there a way to speed up the process ?

Instant clones assigned based on load balance.

On Host disconnect, Horizon View freezes and closes after 2 minutes. Can this time be shortened ?

Once reconnected to new VM there is still a 20 seconds delay. (Time to load/autologin).

Thank you for your answers.

How to create a keystore, manage keys and perform export and import to another vro via rest?

$

Seriously,

No idea how you would do this without trying to dump keystore content to a resource element and try and pass that around vros, recreating the keystores from that.

I've looked at the control-center api. You can download package signing keystore.

vro7601:~ # curl -k --output '1.keystore' -X POST --header 'Content-Type: application/x-www-form-urlencoded' --header 'Accept: application/x-gzip' -d 'password=Password123!' -u 'root:Password123!' 'https://vro7601.vlab.local:8283/vco-controlcenter/api/certificates/export'  % Total    % Received % Xferd  Average Speed   Time    Time     Time  Current                                 Dload  Upload   Total   Spent    Left  Speed
100  8287    0  8262  100    25  16657     50 --:--:-- --:--:-- --:--:-- 16674

Can't seem to download a keystore any other way.

vro7601:~ # curl -k -X GET --header 'Accept: application/json' -u 'root:Password123!' 'https://vro7601.vlab.local:8283/vco-controlcenter/api/ssl/import/keystore/cakeystore-id'
{"error":null,"warning":null,"id":"cakeystore-id","sslCertificate":null}

What ways has anyone successfully managed keystores?

Mainly looking for vRO 7.5/7.6 but would be interested to see if anyone tackled it in 8.1 too.

Cheers,

Red

Documentation for Host Profile management via PowerCLI

Is there clear documentation for the manipulation of host profiles via PowerCLI? I am attempting to change the host profiles we have to support 9000 MTU (Jumbo Frames) on the vnicks assosiated with vmotion via powerCLI but the profiles are incredibly deep and the get-vmhostprofile command returns very generic data for each subordinate value of a field.

WMI Provider Host high CPU

$

Hello,

After upgrading our AppVolumes to version 2.18.2, our instant clones run at a high CPU usage and "WMI Provider Host" is the service that is taking the CPU. This does not happen in the master image, only in the pool of the instant clones. I reverted back to a snapshot with AppVolumes 2.16 and the process is not using the high amount of CPU.

Has anyone seen this and do you have a fix for what might be causing this?
