VMWare Workstation Pro 15 - NAT drops after a few hours

$

Hello:

  • I am running VMWare Workstation Pro 15.1.0 Build 13591040
    • My host machine is Windows 10, 64-bit  (Build 18362) 10.0.18362 with an Ethernet connection active.
      • Windows System Info states:
        • Edition WIndows 10 Pro
        • Version 1903
        • OS Build 18362.295
    • My guests are a Kali-Linux image and a Windows 10 image.
    • I have VMnet8 set up as a NAT in the Virtual Network Editor, "Connect a host virtual adapter to this network" is checked, as is "Use local DHCP service to distribute IP address to VMs".

Both guests have the Network Adapter Network Connection set to NAT, and Connect at power on and Connected are both checked.

When I fresh boot the host machine, then boot my guests, the guest VM's can communicate with each other, the host, and the internet, as expected.  However, after some intermittent time period, somewhere between 2-4 hours, my guest VM's (both the Kali and Windows 10) will lose all connection to the internet.  Restarting the network adapters seems to have no effect.

When this network drop occurs, the following statements are true:

  • the guests can still communicate with each other (ping from one machine on the NAT to the other works, in both directions, as does SSH/port 22)
  • The guests can still communicate with the host and the host with the guests (using ping and SSH)
  • The guests can no longer reach any external address -- All web pages fail to load
    • I have checked if it is DNS as well, but if I ping a public IP such as 8.8.8.8 nothing returns.
  • The host machine can reach the internet without issue, is able to load web pages and ping IP's including 8.8.8.8.
  • The following services are in the "Running" state on the Host
    • VMware Authorization Service
    • VMware DHCP Service
    • VMware NAT Service
    • VMware USB Arbitration Service
    • VMware Workstation Server

The only workaround I have found is rebooting the host machine.  After the host reboots, and I bring the guests back online, the guests can communicate as expected.  Then again, 2-4 hours later, this process repeats.

Has anyone else seen this behavior and/or have any suggestions?

"FAILED: An error occurred during the conversion: 'File-level volume clone error failed with sourcevolume id \WindowsBitmapDriverVolumeId=[0E-83-13-00-00-00-10-00-00-00-00-00] and target volume id >03(31000000010000000000. Error code:395'"

I cannot find any information on error 395. Im doing the same thing I have done before, so im not sure where I am going wrong. I wen through log file but I do not understand enough of what is going wrong to work it out. Has anyone had this issue before and did you solve it?

Invalid Certificate Warning in Android Horizon App

Hi,

I have a UAG 3.6 sitting in a DMZ in front of a Horizon 7.8 connection server. I have a valid wildcard certificate applied on the UAG from GoDaddy. The certificate shows valid on any device except for in the Android VMware Horizon app. This is an issue on all Android devices I have tried. It give the error "This certificate is not trusted". However, the certificate listed is the valid certificate. My only guess is there is an intermediate certificate that is not trusted on Android devices. However, when I had a Horizon Security server, the certificate was showing valid on Android devices.

Does anyone have any ideas why this might be an issue?

Hola amigos:

Using PowerCLI from within PowerShell

Sorry for such a noob question, but I'm trying to determine the best way to implement PowerCLI on my workstation.  I currently use Sapien PowerShell Studio 2019 and since PowerCLI is (as I understand it) a module that can used in PowerShell, I wanted to install it from within PowerShell.  I saw the Get-Module and Update-Module commands, but I don't believe those would work since there's no VMware.PowerCLI in my module inventory.  Can someone please guide me with the best way to get this installed?  I feel a bit lost; especially since it's been a while since I've used either PowerShell or PowerCLI.

Thank you in advance to anyone who can kindly provide some enlightenment.

DNS Issue with converge tool

$

This week I've been working on upgrading our vSphere 6.5 environment to 6.7 U1. I have successfully upgraded both external PSCs and both vCenter servers, one each resides in our production data center and DR site.

I now am attempting to run the converge tool to move away from the external PSC appliance for our production VCSA.

I've set up my JSON file and it passes the template check, however when I do the precheck option, it fails with:

"Could not resolve the 'FQDN of vcenter' to hostname. This issue may be observed due to temporary network problem too.

Now I have attempted this process from a server on the same subnet as the vcenter and PSC. I've also tried from my desktop which has full unrestricted access to that subnet where the servers live. I have tested DNS and have no problem resolving any of the server names to IPs or vice versa from the VCSA, PSC, my desktop, or the utility server on the same subnet.

Even if I remove the FQDN and put in the IP address of the VCSA it throws the same error message.

I'm totally stumped.

The logs offer no more information that this that I can see.

Anyone have any suggestions?

Thanks.

Unable to take quiesced snapshot

$

Hi everybody,

I've a probelm when I try to take a quiesced snapshot on one virtual machine.

the error is:

An error occurred while taking a snapshot: Failed to quiesce the virtual machine.

An error occurred while saving the snapshot: Failed to quiesce the virtual machine

scenario:

vsphere 6.5

VM OS: windows server 2012 r2

vmtools version: 10.1.7

I detect that when my backup is failed, netbackup use the quiesce mode to take the snap.

The snapshot failed since netbackup and if I take it directly on vcenter when I check the quiesced mode.

I tried that:

     - reinstall vmtools

     - try the backup without vmtools (in others VM this works, how netbackup don't detect vmtools can do a normal snapshot.)

     - reinstall without VSS module.

     - the service "vmware service provide" is stopped.

     - I follow this trobleshooting: VMware Knowledge Base

     - starting VSS services.

     - starting Virtual Disk service

I've read this post, Unable to take quiesced snapshot but I can't find the solution there.

I've restored the vm to the last healthy backup, and the error persist.

do you have any idea about it?

thank you very much.

vSphere Replication - Isolated networks

Hello All,

I am in the process of putting a vSphere replication system together and I have seen a couple of blogs with people saying that they are isolating their vSphere replication traffic from all of there normal vmware traffic.

Is this a normal way of setting vSphere replication up? Or is this a people playing around and then bloging about it?

Thanks for the help!

Horizon Client Kiosk

I am attempting to deploy a group of Chromebooks that will automatically launch a Horizon desktop without needing the user to authenticate for a classroom scenario. I am managing the Chromebooks centrally via Google admin and I have successfully configured the Horizon Client to launch from Kiosk mode with a JSON file that provides connection server settings. My connection server has been configured to authenticate on MAC addresses and the automatic login functionality was successfully tested with a WYSE thin client.

I cannot replicate this with automatic connection with the Chromebook. The client will launch, and select the default connection server, but the client will not authenticate without entering a credential. I suspect that am missing a configuration setting in the JSON file that will trigger the client to authenticate via the machine's MAC. I've attempted several variations of the JSON file similar to the one below (sourced from https://chrome-experts.neverware.com/s/article/Deploying-Configuring-VMware-Horizon-View-in-Kiosk-mode-using-Google-Admi… ) with no success. Can anyone provide any insight?

Strange Host Responsiveness Issues

$

- Recently upgraded hosts to 6.7 and vCenter to 6.7a

- Hosts are 'not responding' in vCenter Server

- Can ping

- Cannot acess web interface or login via SSH

- Can access it via console, but after you enter login information and press enter it freezes (cursor is still blinking)

- If you remove the host from the inventory and shut down a virtual machine on the host it brings everything back online and the host can be re-added to vCenter

- Four identical hosts, has happened on three of the four (twice on one)

- The host that had this issue twice now will not come back after trying the above method and is completely unresponsive at the console

macOS Catalina issue [beta]

Hello.  I installed the new macOS 10.15 beta today, and loaded fusion to find that my Windows 7 VM boots up and runs just fine, but only shows a black screen. I can see it in the library and even use it by typing, moving the mouse around in the black screen, and watching in the library but that's all. Has anyone experienced this before? I've tried reinstalling Fusion, to no avail. It also doesn't show anything during post/boot, so it's not a video driver issue I don't think.

- Accelerate 3D Graphics is NOT checked.

- I receive NO error messages.

I installed the NSX Manager 6.3.1 and tried to install NSX controller nodes that I found the Distributed port group is blink but I created the VDS and Distributed port group already. Other VM can assign Distributed port group for use. I ever tried to reinstall the NSA manager and restart the Vcenter but the problem still happen.

Thanks.

ESXi6.5 VMFS5 Datastore Partition Diagram Showing "Unknown"

Background:
Host is an R730 running 6.5u2 Build 8935087 with a ~3TB VMFS-5 datastore

Recently added 4x1TB SATA drives to the RAID5 array via OMSA, reconstructed, and am ready to increase the Datastore size.
The problem is that this is what I see in the GUI:
K6WfUjs.png

This just makes zero sense to me. I've gone through the logs and didn't see any errors that point to a problem. I've verified the GPT is not corrupt and I'm just at a loss here. I could go through and grow it through tthe CLI, but since this IS a prod box, I'm not too keen on rolling the dice.
Any ideas?

Compare vmdk UUID to Windows Disk UUID

$

In windows, a Get-Disk will produce a list of disks with serial numbers. In vMware, a (get-harddisk -vm $vmname).ExtensionData.Backing.Uuid will produce a list of vmdk UUIDs which match the serial numbers produced in windows.

I want to use this fact to correlate what disk in windows resides on what vmdk/vmware disk in vCenter. I would also like to correlate the windows volume name as well. However, i am struggling to get the logic to actually work.

Any way to download

I need to virtualize an old Windows XP physical machine (fully aware about the "risks" involved); I cannot find the stand-alone Converter that would allow me to do so (5.5.3 - or, I guess, earlier).

The direct link mentioned below is broken:

Re: anyone else having issues downloading converter 5.5 or 6.0?

Any way to get ahold of such ancient binaries?

Thank you.

Hello,

I am trying to convert a Hyper-V VM via the Vmware converter. The VM is shutdown.

Through the conversion wizard i use the local administrator account on the hyper-V node, and it lists all the VM's.

I select the turned off VM and it reports to collect vm information, when i get an error that indicates that it is unable to open the vhd file. The administrator account has full rights to the file of couse.
