AD Issues? GPOs not being applied.

$
0
0

We are seeing intermittent issues with our instant clones, there appears to be a delay with GPOs being applied, app stacks being attached, can't get to C$...and other just plain 'weirdness', some clones in the same pool can get to C$ others no .

Clients can work in VDI for several days and then out of the blue, Office is requesting activation (KMS activation), autodiscovery is not working, can't get to admin share.

I have tested with different reference images, made sure SMB was set 2.0, different pools, no UEM , no app stacks...it's always intermittent.

Seeing netlogon errors on both windows clients and the domain controller:

Client - This computer was not able to set up a secure connection with the domain controller...there are currently no logon servers available to service the logon request.

DC -The session setup from the computer  failed to authenticate. The following error occured: Access is denied.

DC -The session setup from the computer failed because the security database does not contain a trust account referenced by the specified computer.

At this point, I'm thinking something outside of VDI. Has anyone experienced AD getting pissed because of instant clones creating AD accounts, deleting, creating accounts, deleting and creating them again and again?

Thank you!

Has anyone successfully installed the OneDrive for Business Client in a non-persistent VDI environment?

Has anyone successfully installed the OneDrive for Business Client in a non-persistent VDI environment?  I'm looking for a procedure to get this working.

I see statements from Microsoft about it being not supported, but I also see blogs and products that appear redirect the OneDrive Offline Sync capability to symbolic link or VHD container.

Any assistance would be appreciated.

AppVolumes with UEM slow logon times

$

Hello Everyone,

I know that this subject have been discussed many times already but I don't seem to be able to find a definitive answer and any help would be greatly appreciated. Here is the overview of our environment: Windows 10 LTSB (1607 build) optimized with VMware Optimization Tool, Horizon View 7.6, vSphere 6.7, AppVolumes 2.14.2.11, UEM 9.5.0.832, Instant Clones ( NVidia GPU Enabled) and no writable volumes, all flash Pure storage. Mounting only max 4 Appstacks per machine

Problem:

Logon time is between 55 to sometimes 80 seconds. Brand new user who logs in for the first time to this environment can login within 35-45 seconds. - Initially placed a call with VMware to help with logon time that was taking anywhere between 90-120 seconds and we were able to get it down by adding the following registry key in HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\svservice\Parameters  VolDelayLoadTime REG_DWORD set to 15. What is does is that it delays attaching appstacks until after user is logged in. It shortened our logon time but the now for example if I pin some apps from appstack to the Start Menu it will not show up on next logon. All apps that reside on Master image stay just not the Apsstack ones which makes sense because those apps are showing later after logon.

Even though we shortened the logon time to roughly 60-70 seconds, it seems to me that we are still very slow ant trading off bad user experience with no ability to pin applications to start.

We are not using mandatory profiles but I'm thinking about creating one to test. Also, our image is joined to the domain whihc I don't think should cause issues with it.

When I watch the logon screen I see that "applying FlexEngine policy" is taking roughly 20-25 seconds and Preparing Windows takes another 20. Is this normal?

Does anybody here in the Community have like a guide or manual to successful Instant Clone build including the master image? I'm pretty sure that we followed all of the VMware guides but was wondering if someone might have something else that would be worth implementing to provide better logon times.

Legacy 4.1, 5.0, 5.5 migration to 6.5U2

$

Hi. I have a customer that has around 20-30 legacy (out-of-support) 4.1-5.5 ESXi hosts (around 900 vm's). The underlying SAN is iSCSI and running very old storage OS (legacy VNX). The customer cannot upgrade the storage OS to support 6.5U2 (long story). Therefore, upgrading the ESXi hosts is not going to work, as the storage would be unsupported.

Question - The VNX can storage replicate to another VNX (at second site). If the second site is running ESXi 6.5U2 hosts, would it be as simple as replicating the legacy vm's (that reside on the 4.1, 5.0, 5.5 ESXi hosts) from site one to site two, and then mounting the replicated LUNs (datastores) to the ESXi 6.5U2 hosts? Basically, could we facilitate the migration of all legacy vm's to new ESXi 6.5U2 hosts via storage replication only? Once again, there doesn't look like there is an opportunity to upgrade the legacy ESXi hosts due to underlying storage incompatibility.

Thanks

Unable to append CSV report with dummy data on error

The IF statement works, the else statement where I report on vCenters with content libraries works.  The ELSE statement does not and I'm stumped.

$vcenters = import-csv D:\temp\vcenters.csv

#get and save creds using securestring

Write-Host "Enter vCenter Credentials"

$uname = Read-Host "Enter UserName"

Read-Host "Enter Password" -AsSecureString | ConvertFrom-SecureString | Out-File cred.txt

$password = Get-Content cred.txt | ConvertTo-SecureString

$cred = new-object -typename System.Management.Automation.PSCredential -argumentlist $uname,$password

#connect to vCenters, get templates, export to csv.

foreach ($vc in $vcenters){

Connect-VIServer -server $vc -Protocol https -Credential $cred -ErrorAction Ignore

   $conlib = Get-ContentLibraryItem

   If (-not ([string]::IsNullOrEmpty($conlib))){

   Get-Contentlibraryitem |Select Name, SizeGB, CreationTime,@{N='vCenter';e={$vc}} |export-csv -append -path c:\temp\conlibtest4.csv -NoTypeInformation

  }

   Else {

   $Return = "" | Select Name, SizeGB, CreationTime,@{N='vCenter';e={$vc}};$return.name="N/A";$Return.SizeGB = "N/A";$Return.CreationTime = "N/A" |

   export-csv -append -path c:\temp\conlibtest4.csv -NoTypeInformation

  }

   disconnect-viserver * -confirm:$false

}

The error message is:

export-csv : Cannot append CSV content to the following file: c:\temp\conlibtest4.csv. The appended object does not have a property that corresponds to the following column: Name. To continue with mismatched properties, add

Name is in my CSV when it reports success.   Thanks!

Finding all VMs in a specific cluster AND folder

$

I'm following this document to upgrade Guest Tools on all my Windows guests after host upgrades, and I want to use the PowerCLI method. The example selects all VMs starting with "prod-":

Get-VM prod-* | ...

I can get all VMs in a specific cluster with:

Get-Cluster clustername | Get-VM | ...

I can get all VMs in a specific folder with:

Get-Folder foldername | Get-VM | ...

What I want is all VMs that are in a specific cluster AND a specific folder, but attempting any combination of the above throws errors. I'm new to PowerCLI/PowerShell... the solution could be glaringly obvious. Can I get a list of all VMs in a specific cluster/folder combination?

execute opaque command for set of entities - what is this message about?

I'm on a system I did not build or configure and keep getting this message - execute opaque command for set of entities. It also includes task saying "Update option values" and "Install" on our various hosts. When this runs, our VMs become disconnected frmo the hosts. They reconnect minutes later.

Where is thus message from and how do I correct the disconnects?

Hi,

I am new to VMware and have installed ESXI 6,7 Update 1 for my IBM server, I have a 10GB Fibre connection that shows correcty as an emulex adapter in Vsphere. In a VM running Windows server 2016 it shows an Intel adapter running 1 gbps.

Also enabled SRIOV but any tips for default setting for Emulex OCE111xxx type adapters with VMWARE and Windows?

Bizarre error & behaviour re: Persona

$

I have a few static VMs in my pool; users can get to them via Horizon View or RDP and things have gone just fine for some time.  Recently however, the machines cannot be accessed.  Logging in via console, I see a message:

"Failed to connect to a windows service...Windows could not connect to the VMware Horizon View Persona Management service.  This problem prevents standard users from logging on to the system.  As an administrative user, you can review the System Events Log for details about why the service didn't...."

I checked the Event Viewer can find NOTHING.  Moreover, if I try to reboot the machine, the screen blanks to the wallpaper and freezes.  I have to force a shut down.

The thing is, Persona isn't running on either machine.  I nuked the VMware Horizon View Agent and the machine now rebooted, and the Persona error did not come up.

This is all rather spontaneous; there is no reason that I can think of for this to occur with these machines.    I'm hoping someone here has some insight to share.

vROPs (Epops) Monitor VCAC-SERVER / VCO-SERVER

Hi,

I have installed epops agent on my vRA appliance and I want to monitor both vcac-server and vco-server, But I am unable to do so.

The UI ask for State.Name. when provided vcac or vcac-server or vco or vco-server, it's not able to monitor.

I found one link on the web to check the state name based on PID using Sigar-1.6.6.13.jar. But the result for both the services were same. The State.Name were java.

With this, the monitor was able to recognize the service but it was in general to all java related service.

I did one test and stopped the vco-server but the health monitor didn't showed any issue. According to it, the service was up and running.

Anybody found any resolution for this ?  (Management pack is not an option at this time.

UEM hanging/delaying randomly.

Running horizon 7.6 with UEM 9.5 and appvol 2.14.  Parent is windows 10 1607 LTSB, floating instant clones.  App data is not redirected, documents/favorites/desktop/etc.. are.

Occasionally i am seeing login delays when processing UEM.  On average UEM processes between 5-6 seconds.  However we have some users that it takes 25+ seconds occasionally with UEM not reporting why.

Example from logs:

2018-12-12 14:02:48.063 [DEBUG] Conditions: Check for endpoint name = false ('C81MK6V1' is not equal to 'LJ2359H2')

I can reproduce this by logging in over and over.  At times it happens, at times it does not although frequently enough it is easily reproducible.  It does not appear to be related to any specific pool or UEM setting.  It also isn't tied to any specific hosts, users, or type of client (thin or laptop), or version of horizon.

The UEM data is stored on a windows 2008 R2 server file share, which is a VM running off an all flash datastore on a Dell Compellent.  There are no indications the Compellent it is struggling to server the data, or on the file server.  This is as likely to happen during the morning login as it is when people leave for the day.

This appears to of been going on for a long while, this environment is just now getting healthy enough from the previous admin to where smaller issues like this can be tracked down.  But my googlefu is failing to find any possible solutions for this.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thank you,

Billy

Default value of appliance size for automatically created ESG and DLR

$

Hello,

Depending on the used feature, vCloud Director will automatically create Edge Services Gateways and Distributed Logical Routers in the background. For example, if we use vApp networks or when we use the distributed routing feature of an Edge Gateway.

However, vCD creates all these NSX appliances with the appliance size "Compact". Does anyone know a way to change this default value? So, that these automatically created ESG and DLR are deployed in the size "Large"? Maybe via a config option in the cell-management-tool and the sub command "manage-config"?

If we manually create a perimeter edge gateway for an oVDC, we can choose the size (Compact, Large, X-Large or Quad Large). But I am interested in the default value for the size of the NSX appliances that are automatically created by vCD in the background.

It would be great if anyone knows how to accomplish this.

Thanks!

Replication Appliance - vcenter server port grayed out

$

Migrated a vcenter server from 6.0 windows/SQL to 6.5 appliance/embedded. The migration assistant was throwing an error for port 80. Seems the SQL Report Manager had grabbed port 80 in the original config and vcenter had used port 81. We modified the SQL port and changed vcenter 6.0 back to port 80 to continue with the migration.

Prior to migration the 8.1 replication appliance was using port 81 for the 6.0 vcenter server.  Now it's causing errors.

Is there a command line method of modifying this to port 80 without reinstalling/reconfiguring the replications?

Thanks.

Reproducible FireFox 60.0.2 Crash after working 1-3 times per session

Hi,

we discovered an error in a customer environment which is reproducable in our LAB which is completely fresh installed.

We use a clean Windows7 x64 VM, fully patched with Horizon View 7.4 Agent and AppVolumes 2.14.

Single Appstack, only Firefox 60.0.2 64bit German Version.

Clean User Profile, no Profile Management solution for testing

Starting Firefox works fine - open, browse, close.

Open again/browse/close works fine for several times. But if you open some tabs, stop using firefox for some minutes and close it, it won't open again.

Firefox is on the newest Version, so no update in the background.

-Safe-mode :not working

-deleting FireFox Profile :not working

-same behavior with View Agent 7.3.2, AppVolumes Agent 2.13.3, old AppVolumes Template.

-Copying the FireFox program directory to c:\temp and start FireFox from there works fine

Any Idea how to find out whats going on here ?

Is there a possibility to debug the AppVolumes driver ?

Jens

Creating an AppCapture VM

$

0

I'm getting a weird behavior with Windows 10 1803 64-bit and AppVolumes 2.14.0 when trying to capture applications.

I can capture applications as expected except when the VM needs rebooted to complete the installation of the desired applications.  Example, Office 2013 updates.

If I create a brand new AppStack and install an application, I can reboot the session as many times as needed without any issues.

As soon as I "update" the provisioned AppStack, install either an updated version of the application or Office updates and need to reboot to complete the installation, upon re-logging into the provisioning VM, I get the Windows error "sihost.exe - Unknown Hard Error".  Once that error is thrown the entire user profile is corrupt and my AppStack session is ruined.

I've tried this on Windows 10 1709 64-bit and can reproduce it on there as well.  I can replicate this with multiple applications (not just Microsoft products).

How are other people building their AppCapture VMs? Do you build them almost identical to your golden template?  Or are you using a plain vanilla VM with no changes made?

I have a case open with VMware about this issue but so haven't made any progress.
