Guest machine crashing during ChefBuild

$

0

Hey everyone.

Currently I'm running a VM that has Mac OSX 10.13.4 and Chef 13.8

It's running 8 Cores with 8gbs of RAM and 70gb HDD.

I'm not sure why, but whenever I run a zero instance of Chef the machine just crashes.  I've attached the logs to help better understand what's going on. I can run the chef commands on the host machine just fine.

If you need more info let me know,

Thank you.

How to get 95th Percentile for CPU & Memory every 30 days?

$

I'm looking for a way to get a monthly report for 95th percentile for CPU and memory on my vm farm.  I don't necessarily need individual VMs...I just need the overall.  Is this something that can be done w/ vRops 6.6, or powerCLI?

I've been searching for days and finding some things that come close..but aren't quite what I need.

Moving a vCenter server to a new environment

Hi all,

I have vSphere A which is made up of 6 hosts, 3 in cluster1 and 3 in cluster2 both managed by vCenter101. This environment has 2 SAN volumes via iSCSI software adapters, resource pools and distributed switches.

I now have to move the cluster1 and the SAN volumes to a entirely new environment called vSphere B which has no access to the old environment but the network addressing will be the same. And I would like to avoid reconfigure everything from scratch.

I thought of cloning the current vCenter101 into vSphere B and use it as its vCenter server since it has the distributed switch and all other config in there.

I have cloned it, moved it to a host in the new environment, connected to the host it is sitting on via vSphere client, disconnected its network adapter, switched it on, changed the IP address, restarted vMware services and logged onto itself using vSphere client and I can log in. I can also see all the old configs. VMs, DVSwitches, port groups, etc. It just shows everything is not responding because it is isolated.

Now if I connect it to the management network of the new environment (same IP addressing), will it work? Has anyone tried it before?

Thanks

vCenter AD integration migration

Hi all,

I have an old vSphere environment with VMs, Windows AD server and domain joined vCenter server.

Now I had to move my vSphere to a new environment. I brought along all the VMs and the vCenter server. I had to leave the AD server int he old environment.

The two environments have no access to eachother.

Right now, to manage my hosts via vCenter server in the new environment, I have to use a backup local admin account for the vCenter server.

I do have a new AD server but I dont know how to make the old vCenter integrate with a new/different AD server.

How would I do this? Any ideas/suggestions?

Thanks

Onyx equivalent for 6.5?

Hi,

I am just curios if there is a Onyx like app or native functionality for VC6.5 to view the PS tasks. For the most part I have been running a side 6.0VC so that i can use onyx to get some PS commandlets/structure, but it's getting really annoying.

I'm ok with it been for either Win or VCSA.

Thank you.

i did a 5-tile run with turbo mode enabled, and the SUT is a 4 hosts server with a vsanDatastore

a server which has two iSCSi shared storage were also configured for the test(named iscsi0 and iscsi1).

and the standy VMs and DS3WebA VMs were all placed in iscsi1.

this turbo test was completed with 5 stages passed(in STAX) but no graph.html nor the score generated.

the STAX monitor just showed strange messages:

Reporter Results : 10.101.6.3 : Failed : Errors rm errors:em: can't remove '/vmfs/volumes/iscsi1/reporter-20180411-04329295974/.......... No such file or directory : Warnings None

it seemed the file paths pointed to the vmmark-template VMs but i was able to accomplish a compliant 4-tile test with same configurations before.

any ideas about this error message?(related files are attached)

thanks!

vRO 7.4 is not logging workflow runs and complaining of Lucene60

Just updated my home lab vra/vro from 7.3.1 to 7.4.0 .  Installation seemed to go flawlessly, except vro.

When I try to run a workflow, the workflow completes, but nothing is in the log.  When I look at the system log, I see:

Hi - tried starting up one of my virtual machines - a Windows 10, 64 bit machine and get the following error:

Unable to open file "/Users/W6JHB/Documents/Virtual Machines.localized/Windows 10 x64 - W6JHB.vmwarevm/Virtual Disk-000002.vmdk":

I have a Mac Time Machine backup but it only goes back a couple days due to some hard drive replacement issues. Is there any way to rebuild/recover this file without completely starting over with this VM? I can do that, but it will take a LOT of time, is a major PITA, and not something I really want to go through.

I'm running Fusion 8.5.9 on an iMac with El Capitan, 10.11.6

Any ideas?

NSX Time Sync

We are on a closed network in a test lab and don' t have a valid time source or NTP Server.

We are running ESXi 6.5 on two servers and 6.5 U1 VCSA.

We are looking at NSX for DFW (Micro-Segmentation) as a POC and may later move to a full implementation ofNSX.

For VCSA time sync, I am using one of the 6.5 ESXi Servers.

I have VCSA using LDAP for AD authentication running on a VM (DC) on a 6.0 ESXi host.

Since at this time, we are not deploying the full NSX system (controllers,,),

Is there a way to set up NSX DFW to use ESXi host time?

or

do we need some sort of internal time source on a VM?

thanks

In ESXi 6 cluster I created and configured 3 resource pools because there are over-commitment problems.

Now I need to set VM power priority: if ESXi host was damaged vSphere HA will start every vm on the others hosts, always if resources were available.

I want to configure what VM have priority to start.

ESXi 6.5 RDM Spindown/hdparm

Hi,

I've attached two physical drives as RDM to an Ubuntu Server (16.04) VM as described here: https://gist.github.com/Hengjie/1520114890bebe8f805d337af4b3a064

How to passthrough SATA drives directly on VMWare ESXI 6.5 as RDMs · GitHub - in short: attaching a physikal disk with vmkfstools and mapping it to a vdmk file which is added via SCSI Controller as a Hard Disk to the VM.

As I do not need those drives active more then once or twice a week, I would like to be able to spin them down / put them to sleep. Using hdparm I get

sudo hdparm -C /dev/sdc

/dev/sdc:

SG_IO: bad/missing sense data, sb[]:  70 00 05 00 00 00 00 0b 00 00 00 00 24 00 00 c0 01 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00

drive state is:  standby

Even if the drive is in use. So I've installed sdparm to meet possible scsi requirements but as far as I understand the results, it seems that I can not influence the spindown:

sudo sdparm -l /dev/sdc

    /dev/sdc: ATA       WDC WD60EFRX-68L  0A82

Direct access device specific parameters: WP=0  DPOFUA=0

With a windows system, the spindown seems to work with RDM disks (VMware ESXi: HDD Standby (spin down) mit physical RDM unter Windows | blog.bistron.eu  - german) but has anyone an hint for me, how to make it possible using Linux?

Disconnecting problem with restarting management agents via plink

$

Greetings,

I'm having some powershell issues restarting esxi management agents via ssh. The script is connecting fine to the esxi host, and does restart the agents, but it never disconnects, so it can never move on to the next steps in the script.

command:

echo Y|c:\putty\plink.exe "$($username)@"$($vmhip)" -pw "$($password)" 'services.sh restart;exit' > "$($scriptoutputpath)$($site)\$($vmhostname).log" 2>&1

In the output i'm seeing the command finishing with output of "Server sent command exit status 0", but it doesn't actually disconnect the session and hangs the script. For kicks, i changed exit to "esxcli" and in the log i see it run the management agent restart just fine, and i see the host drop from vcenter and come back, and then i see in the log the esxcli output giving all the various syntax. I've also done it with just the esxcli command being executed and it does execute it, and then disconnects the session. Some reason when i restart the management agents, it keeps the session going indefinitely.

Anyone know what i may be doing wrong here? i've tried some other peoples scripts as well, which have the same results, where the agents restart, but the plink session never seems to end.

Vmkernel Build Number on ESXi Webpage of the host ESXi 5.5

Hi

Just wondering if this is some sort of bug in the software, the webpage, see attached is reporting a different build if you login to vCenter

Webpage info

You are running HP Customized Image ESXi 5.5.0 version 5.72.27 based on ESXi 5.5.0 Vmkernel Release Build 1331820.

In vCenter for this host we have build version 7460778.

Just seems really strange how different the version are, any advice would be greatly received.

Thanks
