VM crash dump recorded - Where can I send it to?

$

One of my VMs crashed and created a VMware dump report.

I'd like to help, so I'd like to provide this dump file to VMware.

Where can I send this report to without being required to pay for that?

Vmware Vsphere Data Center Architecture Design Version 6.0

I am working to Built scalable and optimal Data-center Design in VMware Environment.

1: Lets Assume in 3-5 UCS-Blade Server environment where we could place the Vcenter?

2: That can be VCenter as appliance or on top of Windows?

3: What are the recommendation and best Practice to place the Vcenter?

4: It must be on Separate Rack Mount Server or can be in any Blade inside the UCS?

5: Apart from the placement of Vcenter / VCSA the database should be Embedded or on separate Server?

ESXi 5.5 U3 network connectivity loss beyond local LAN

$

Hello all,

I have been banging my head against the wall on this issue, I can't seem to get it sorted.

Network connectivity:

Internet router-> DMZ -> Firewall -> ESXi 5.5 host on a HP Proliant with a number of guests. No VLAN's, just a flat switch connecting the ESXi host to the firewall. The firewall's WAN port connects to the router.

I have upgraded the BIOS/firmware of the Proliant to the latest version, and as I encountered network issues after the firmware upgrade, I decided to upgrade the ESXi host to the latest 5.5 U3 release (HP ISO). In thinking that the firmware release should be matched by the VMWare drivers.

Ever since I can't get some of the guests to reach out to the internet router or beyond. They can ping the local network devices and other guest systems, but not the internet router or addresses on the internet. However, some guests still can, so it is not all-encompassing; non-working guests are a mix of Linux and Windows, so it is not tied to one operating system. And testing a fresh install of a Windows guest is confirming that this is working fine. And some Linux guests still work fine.

I have tried a lot of things, and found out that changing the IP addresses of the guests that experienced this problem got them to be able to ping the router again, and be able to reach the internet. However, I need to use the original IP addresses as other configurations depend on it. Besides, I don't like workarounds without understanding the underlying issue.

The firewall logs show the connections being permitted.

I have tried various things, like

changing from a vmxnet3 to an E1000,

changing from the assigned MAC address to a self-defined address,

Uninstalling VMWare Tools, rebooting, resetting the IP and Winsock configuration, reinstalling VMWare Tools,

upgraded a W2008R2 guest system to W2012R2, to see if it was related to the OS release, to no avail.

Even wanted to move to ESXi 6.0, but without knowing if this is a problem with 5.5, I don't want to embark on another upgrade without further knowledge.

Does anybody have any further ideas, tips, pointers?

Huge thanks in advance for any help you may provide.

What are the reason for this error? "This Virtual Machine uses Hardware Version 1, Which is no longer supported. Upgrade is recommended"

Which setting create this error during the creation of VM for windows and what are the steps to resolve this problem?

NoPermissionFault when deploying clone

Hi there

I was wondering if any has experienced this. I am getting the following errors

View Composer Fault: Unexpected VC fault from View Composer (Unknown) - Unknown - <NoPermissionFault xmlns="urn:internalvim25" xsi:type="NoPermission" xmlns:xsi="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema-instance"><object type="Folder" serverGuid="27ad98d7-f12a-4b47-a16d-183d24da5bff">group-d1</object><privilegeId>Global.DisableMethods</privilegeId></NoPermissionFault> for VM lc-win1

View Composer Fault: Unexpected VC fault from View Composer (Unknown) - Unknown - <NoPermissionFault xmlns="urn:internalvim25" xsi:type="NoPermission" xmlns:xsi="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema-instance"><object type="VirtualMachine" serverGuid="27ad98d7-f12a-4b47-a16d-183d24da5bff">vm-64</object><privilegeId>VirtualMachine.Provisioning.Clone</privilegeId></NoPermissionFault> for VM ded-win10-2

That is pretty much as what is described at https://www.vmadmin.co.uk/resources/53-view/344-viewcomposererrornopermission

However, I don't think it is a permission issue as I now gave the composer service account administrator privileges.

I have encountered the following FATAL entries in log

Converting windows 7 parallels VM using VMWare Fusion then moving to Workstation fails

I have been trying to move some virtual machines from my Mac to a new Windows 10 HP Laptop. I have used the following process:

  1. Installed VMWare Fusion 8.5.6 on mac (trial)
  2. Opened Parallels VM (Win 7) in VMWare Fusion and opened the VM. Allowed VMWare tools to install and reboot vm. Everything appears to be working fine.
  3. Shut down VM and transferred to Windows 10 system
  4. Opened VM and received an error (I've attached the log file)

Any ideas what is going wrong here?

Thanks,

Ron

Regular cluster or stretched cluster

Scenario: 2 datacenters with 0.5 ms latency between. We want to deploy both hybrid and AllFlash VSAN clusters.

Would a regular cluster be supported in this setup?

What is the criteria for a supported setup?

A regular cluster gives more flexibility and does not have the same constrains as a stretched cluster. (and management overhead for managing a witness host in a third site)

Networking is stretched between the datacenters.

Unable to connect to the MKS: Login (username/password) incorrect

I am trying to use the VMware workstation 12, connect to server functionality but I get that error message.

My desktop pc (host) is running windows 7, and running VMware workstation 12. I have shared one of my virtual machines. I have enable port, 443, 902, and 903 on my router. I have temporarily turned off my firewall.

When I try to connect to the host from my laptop running Kubuntu and Vmware workstation 12, I am able to connect to the host, I'm able to see my shared VM and I'm able to turn it on and off but that is pretty much it. I cant actually use the VM because i get the message in the title.

Can someone help me out? Thank You.

Update Manager Remediation Stuck at 30-33% for Days

I'm running the latest VCSA and am trying to apply patches to my cluster of 2 vSphere 6.5 hosts. I've tried applying them to one server at a time, just one patch at a time, etc. No matter what I try the remediation sticks at either 30% or 33%.

I prestage the updates and all 7 non critical patches have staged and 1 of 3 critical patches has as well. The other 2 criticals don't seem to be staging.

I  could use some help troubleshooting this including locating the correct logs for VUM in the VCSA.

Thanks in advance!

vCenter 6.5 DR topology

Dear Community

I am looking to upgrade my vCenter 5.5 (Running on Windows Server 2008 R2) to 6.5. I have multiple sites, but currently only a single vCenter server.

I am looking to get some DR capabilities for vCenter.

I have been reading various VMware KB articles with various scenarios, but it requires several VMs per site.

Generally 2 PSCs per site with 1 or 2 vCenter servers.

For my 2 sites, can I install a single PSC in each site and a single vCenter server in each site and achieve DR?

With 2 PSCs in a site, they will replicate information between each other. Not sure if that is possible across sites?

While the PSCs can replicate information, how will vCenter specific data be replicated?

vmware cmdlet to access a vm and set an ssh credential

Hi all,

I have been looking into doing some automation work and the first step for this to work is i need to be able to make sure ssh config are added onto a vm through vmware powershell (or cli interface)

I was wondering if we have a set cmdlet command that would allow me to set the ssh username and password on a linux vm?

Your help would be very much appreciated.

VMs very slow or won't start after applying March 2017 ESXi patch to 6.0

$

I applied the patch from CVE-2017-4903 / ESXi600-201703401-SG to some ESXi 6 hosts today.  I got 4 hosts done with no issues, but then I hit trouble.  The patch installed (using VUM) and reboot was clean.  However, after 20-30 minutes, the VMs were still trying to start and appeared stuck.  Forcing a host reboot didn't help.  Finally another forced reboot, and SHIFT+R to revert back to previous build which is Update3.

There were no warnings or errors in vCenter.  Looking at Realtime stats, CPU, memory and disk were high but not off the charts.  I've never had an issue like this before, and wouldn't know where to start.

Anyone else have problems like this?

vRealize Operation Manager 6.5 connectivity

Hi,

I have confirmed that vRealize Operations Manager 6.5 is compatible with Usage Meter 3.5.  I am trying to add any user to the Usage Meter, but am failing.

Adding the user as username@domain I receive the following

org.springframework.http.converter.HttpMessageNotReadableException: Could not read JSON: Unable to unmarshal (to type [simple type, class java.lang.String]): Could not map [NOT_EXISTING] to ResourceState (through reference chain: com.vmware.ops.api.model.resource.ResourceDtoList["resourceList"]->com.vmware.ops.api.model.resource.ResourceDto["resourceStatusStates"]->com.vmware.ops.api.model.resource.ResourceStatusState["resourceState"]); nested exception is org.codehaus.jackson.map.JsonMappingException: Unable to unmarshal (to type [simple type, class java.lang.String]): Could not map [NOT_EXISTING] to ResourceState (through reference chain: com.vmware.ops.api.model.resource.ResourceDtoList["resourceList"]->com.vmware.ops.api.model.resource.ResourceDto["resourceStatusStates"]->com.vmware.ops.api.model.resource.ResourceStatusState["resourceState"])

Adding the user as a local user of vROps or domain\username I receive the following:

com.vmware.ops.api.client.exceptions.AuthException: API call failed, reason = 401

I've tried different permission levels, but am not getting any improvement.

I noticed that the vCenter references vROPs still as 6.4 and the Usage meter shows the below.  Is this contributing to the problem?

6.4.0.000000VMware vRealize Operations Not yet discovered

Thanks in advance,

DRS causing excessive VMotions after upgrade to VCenter 6.5

$
0
0

Just a quick note in case someone else has this problem.

After upgrading my production VCenter Environment to 6.5, we were experiencing a high number of VMotions between hosts.  It was like DRS had lost it's mind.  Our clusters were never going above the Standard Deviation value, yet VMotion would occur constantly.  My primary cluster with 22 hosts performed approximately 20,000 VMotions within 2 weeks.  That cluster had only performed about 3,000 migrations in the lifetime of the cluster prior to the upgrade.  We bumped the DRS Migration Threshold from 3 to 2 with no real change in behavior.

In the end, it looks like there have been some substantial updates to DRS in 6.5.  You can read about them here:

https://www.vmware.com/content/dam/digitalmarketing/vmware/en/pdf/techpaper/drs-vsphere65-perf.pdf

The feature that was killing us though was Pair-Wise Balancing.  By trying to keep all hosts at roughly the same performance level, it was migrating VMs constantly.  It doesn't seem to affect my clusters that only have a few hosts, only my clusters that have 6 or more hosts.

To turn the feature off, set the following advanced option in your DRS settings for the cluster:

CheckPairwiseImbalance = 0.

Support wasn't overly familiar with the DRS updates in 6.5, so they had some problems assisting me.  We ended up finding the issue ourselves, so hopefully this helps someone else out there after their upgrade.
