Is there an easy way to "diff" or compare two snapshots (or a snapshot and the current virtual machine) to see which files are different between them?
I can see many uses for this capability, but the one I am thinking about is if a suspicious or infected application is run or a malicious file is opened, to determine whether it hid files in unexpected locations.
Leap Motion Controller (USB device) always remains off in Windows 7 and 8 run in Fusion v.8. All drivers are installed but the device status remains offline. It works in Mac OSX ok. I tried to deactivate it in OSX but it is still off in Windows VM.
I am running OSX Mavericks 10.9.5 and running Windows 7 from a Bootcamp partition using VmWare Fusion.
After upgrading to VmWare Fusion 8.0.2, if I leave the VM running for a few hours, the MacBook freezes up completely. The mouse cursor moves, but nothing else functions. I have to power off the Mac completely.
Invariably, in the Mac Console, I find this message a few seconds before the freeze occurred:
Nov 5 11:00:53 kpa04-2.local WindowServer[95]: disable_update_timeout: UI updates were forcibly disabled by application "VMware Fusion" for over 1.00 seconds. Server has re-enabled them.
This problem never happened with Vmware 6. It is new to Vmware 8. I am running only one VM with Windows 7, my bread and butter workstation.
If I do not start Vmware, the Mac runs for days at a time without any problem. So this freeze is almost certainly caused by VmWare.
Any ideas for things to look at or change? I have disabled App Nap and Shared Folders already.
Thanks in advance!
Hi all,
While waiting for VMware to answer my support call I thought I 'd ask you guys. We recently updated vCenter to 5.5 u3a with no issues. Yesterday I started upgrading the hosts. I have a two node cluster that I use as dev environment but it's the same as production in terms of config. So, I move all the running VMs from one host to another (using vMotion obviously) and I updated the host through update manager to u3a. When it was back from the reboot I took it out of maintenance and I tried to vmotion back the vms so I could update the other server. The vms reached 14% of the vmotion and failed with error "The vMotion migrations failed because the ESX hosts were not able to connect over the vMotion network. Check the vMotion network settings and physical network configuration."
I have verified that ping from the cli with vmkping the other node's vmotion ip is not working. I have also verified that the migrate module is running on the server. I have also tried to remove and readd the vmotion vmk with no change in behaviour. There were no config changes done on the host/network or anything else apart from the upgrade.
Any ideas of what I can try?
Thanks.
I have FPS Drop in Need for Speed: Underground in Windows XP SP2 in VMware Workstation 12 Pro. I'm playing in VMware Workstation because game freezing in Windows 10 and i can't play it. I have a good computer.
Sorry for the disturb, but I have a lot of unwanted messages in my inbox and I do not know how to cancel.... is there a way to do it, please ?
I need a reliable way to check to see if my vCenter session is active. I am aware of $global:DefaultVIServer.IsConnected, but does anyone know how often that is updated from $true to $false if vCenter goes down? I performed a quick test and connected to a vCenter, validated IsConnected = $true, stopped the vCenter services and it took several mins before it ever updated to IsConnected = $false. I even ran some basic cmds (Get-VM, Get-Cluster, etc) trying to see if that would update IsConnected = $false, but I had no luck.
I have a very long maintenance script that runs throughout the night and I need to be able to check the status of my vCenter session multiple times during the maintenance script. My initial thoughts were to build a function around the status of IsConnected, but based off of my testing and the amount of time it took to update I am not sure that is the correct path.
Does anyone have a better suggestion on checking the status of my vCenter session or know of a way to force IsConnected to update immediately after the vCenter session is killed?
Hi guys,
I have a virtual machine with 4 virtual disks (e.g. 1.vmdk, 2.vmdk, 3.vmdk, and 4.vmdk) all located on one SAN volume (e.g. SANVOL03). How can I move just one of the virtual disks (e.g. 3.vmdk) from it's current SAN volume to another (e.g. from SANVOL03 to SANVOL04) without powering off the VM? This is in vsphere 4.1
I am facing this error meesage while trying to configure a shared disk for two different guest located on two different host.
I installed windows 2008 enterprise 64 bit on both the node.
Both node are on different host. I wanted to create a failover cluster.
I assigned a RDM disk to first node and selected a datastore which is located on SAN.
Then I tried to assign this disk to second node by selecting "use an existing virtual disk". I selected the same "Disk File Path" .
But i am just seeing the error saying "Incompatible device backing specified for device '0'".
I am using ESXi 5.0 evaluation.
I tried some fixes like renaming the .vmdk files and deleting cdrom from the add hardware - but none of them worked actually.

I upgraded my vCenter to 5.5 from 5.1 and it works except the Web Client has incorrect inventory data. It is missing some VMs and has some ghost VMs that don't actually exist. There aren't any error messages that suggest the server is malfunctioning. The really strange thing is that when I connect with the vSphere Client on Windows, everything is correct there. Also Veeam shows all the correct inventory when it connects to the vCenter server. So its only the Web Client that is wrong. Has anyone experienced this or have any ideas on how to force the Web Client to refresh?
edit: forgot to mention this is VCSA

Hi
I've been having trouble with the VDP Appliance in Version 6.1. Its a fresh install, running on a Windows vCenter 6.0.0 Build 3018524 and using a Buffalo TeraStation NAS as backup destination.
The problem starts when I try any kind of backup job. Before that everything works as intended. Creating jobs, managing the appliance etc. Once I start a backup job the appliance kind of freezes. In the web client it wont load any data
Sometimes in runs into the error that the time snyc. isnt working properly. Although I have checked vCenter Server, the hosts and the appliance. They're all configured with the proper ntp server and syncing properly. The VDP appliance is also showing the correct time. Restartet the tools services aswell.
At some point the Web Client looses the connection to the appliance.
Connecting over SSH to the appliance sometimes runs into timeouts aswell. Restarting the VDP appliance takes about 20-30 minutes.
UPDATE:
After literally a hour I was able to connect back into the appliance within the the web client. My test backup job started gradually counting up to 38% (Its 20GB small and really shouldnt take a hour to backup). After a few minutes it disconnected again.. the task stopping at 38%.
One thing to note: The VDPs virtual install disk is running on the same datastore as where its backing up to. Could this be the problem im having? I cant really any other problems within the config.

Hi all,
I'm troubleshooting the lack of USB connectivity in my Ubuntu 13.04 guest under Fusion 6.0.2, running on OS X 10.8.5. I'd like some suggestions on what else to try, or a confirmation that USB 3 hardware are simply not supported AT ALL under linux guests, regardless if they are connected USB3 or USB2 compatiblity mode. I don't care if it's supported in either mode, I just need access to the disk.
I've got a USB3 external hard disk (Pluggable SATA HDD Docking Station, manufacturer supported under linux). It works fine on the host, and also works fine if I boot the host into Ubuntu 13.04 off a live CD. So I think I can say it's not a hardware problem.
The first time I connected the disk, I got a message from Fusion warning "The device (…) was unable to connect to its ideal host controller" which I'm assuming means a USB 3 controller in the guest.
I found an article discussing limited USB 3 support in Workstation 9 on windows hosts( http://kb.vmware.com/selfservice/microsites/search.do?language=en_US&cmd=displayKC&externalId=2041591) but it doesn't address other host platforms. It lists a workaround of using a USB 2 cable and or hub. Apparently Fusion and Wks9 share some code, so I'm not sure this even completly applies to Fusion, but maybe it does.
So I tried it. I used a USB 2 cable, and set USB Compatibility to 2.0 in the VM's settings. I don't have a hub to try. Same error message, still didn't recognize the disk. In the ubuntu live CD environment, this cable combination DOES result in a successful USB 2 link (ahci not xhci kernel modules are automatically loaded). So I think I've got a USB 2 compatible setup.
As seen in the logs below, it appears linux is talking to the disk controller, but not the disk itself. I usually hear it spin down when the drive is connected to the VM.
Here's the guest /var/log/syslog when the disk is connected with a USB 3 cable:

Other USB 2 devices (like flash drives) work fine in the guest OS.
I'm using Ubuntu 13.04 because it's listed as an officially supported guest. I have also tried 13.10 with identical results.
Any help, ideas, or clarification would be appreciated. As I said before, I don't care about USB 3 speed (although it would be nice). I just need access to the disk in the guest via USB. (Note: the filesystem is ext3 so I would prefer not to mount it on the host and share the folder to the guest os).
Thanks!
Hi,
In the 1.15 VIX distribution, the "64-bit" directory contains a copy of the "32-bit" directory files and not the 64-bit versions of the binaries as it should.
Please can we have an updated VIX distribution with the correct 64-bit binaries please?
Thanks,
James
I'm working on a vCO workflow that will enable members of my team to set up new teams in vCAC..
I can't seem to workout how to map the output of "Create a Machine Prefix" , which is vCAC:Entity to the Machine Prefix Input (defaultMachinePrefix) which is vCACCAFE:MachinePrefix.
When I try to pass the entity ID to defaultMachine prefix I get the following error: Cannot convert undefined to java.util.UUID (Workflow:Set up new vCAC User / Create a Business Group (item6)#4)
Has anyone had any success or am I trying to do something that can't be done?
Cheers
Hi,
Today I was busy with trying to test the L2 VPN feature and I got an error message on the L2 VPN Server that I was not allowed to enable the "L2 VPN Server" when the SSL VPN-Plus feature is enabled.
Is there a way that these two can run simultaneously?
And what is the (technical) reason why this is not working, or can not work at this moment?
The L2 VPN together with the SSL VPN-Plus feature enabled together works fine by the way, but with the server it does not work...
I get the error message "Did not get an IP Address from DHCP server" during a scripted usb installation. The message times out, and then the installation continues. I don't want the error uring the process.
The relevant boot.cfg line looks like this:

This looks like a bug to me.
Immediately before installing Workstation, I always create an image of Windows.
(really sorry to say, that is not without reason....based on past experience)
Today I installed Workstation v12.0.1-3160714 x64.
Workstation was not installed before.
Immediately after installation I lost network access.
Often shutting down and rebooting the PC helps, so I tried that option.
However, the PC would not close, even not after 10 minutes.
So I had to shut down using the power-button
Therefore restored the image.
Why is this?
I simply went through the installation proces.
Do I need to do anything else, on top of this installation to get things going?
Appreciate recommendations.
Thanks!
